Hi, I have encountered a problem with my selespeed gearbox, when stopping at junctions is sometimes goes into neutral and I can't get it back into gear without restarting the engine (at times can take several atempts). Took it into AC Williams at Grantham (who are an excellent dealer) and they could not find a fault. Filled up gearbox oil and tweaked something else but after about 400 miles it is playing up again. Was told when I picked it up that if it faults again that the gearbox may need to be replaced. My view is that it is not a mechanical but a electronic fault. Has anyone else encountered this? And how much would I expect to pay for a new gearbox.

2002 Stilo Arbarth (may be grey but what a mover!!).

Thanks

Dougie

I had a selespeed actuator fault, that left me stranded on a roundabout for an hour in rush-hour

Luckily covered by warranty, although I had to cover the cost of a hire car for 2 weeks :(

Like you I dont think its a gearbox fault, callibration could be the answer here.Unfortunally selespeed/dual logic boxes are misunderstood but in reality they are actually quite simple & examiner has great active diagnosis/select options to locate the fault.

Similar problem on mine, got worse and worse until it finally gave up the ghost travelling into Bristol in the morning in peak traffic where it decided enough was enough. Parked it for an hour, came back and it went into gear. Limped it to fiat who diagnosed selespeed pump failure, fitted new and hey presto all was well with the world again.

cause yours is a dual logic,'dougies' is a selespeed and UK has good techs:devil:

Thought they're pretty much the same thing?

Then again it doesn't matter as I can't imagine many good techs down here.

Hi all, fully appreciate I started this thread a while ago, but picked up my stilo last Monday evening. Part no. 0071719384 Valve was fitted total cost £726.21. Took the car out for about 50 miles today, went fine until I came upon traffic near home. Well blow me down, came to a halt, came down to 1st gear and whilst idling slipped into neutral!!

Slightly different problem before as it was going straight into neutral before. Also noticed that when setting off, would race in first or second gear for a while before skipping a gear and going directly into 3rd or 4th.

I am now at the end of my tether with this damn car. The problem so far has cost me over £1,400.00 and it is still not sorted!!

Any ideas?

I read somewhere on the net that if you are stuck in a tailback that's not visibly moving then you should put it into N or it will automatically go into N after 1 minute or so to avoid clutch overheating, I would think this 'timer'
may be at fault,
another poster on a forum somewhere had a similar problem & it turned out to be a fault on the drivers door, if its opened with the engine running then the gearbox goes into N, check the button in the doorway to see if it may be loose

could it be something simple like the drivers door switch is broken? If the car is idling in 1st gear and you open the door, it will put itself into neutral, and sound an alarm at the same time! If youre idling in 1st gear in traffic, and the door switch is telling the computer that the door is open then it will select neutral. But you should also get a door open symbol/warning on the instrument cluster.

OR, there is a timer built in to the computer that tells the gearbox to select neutral if the car has been idling to long. this always happens whilst waiting for my big mac meal in the mcDonalds queue. Maybe your timer is faulty, and as soon as the car is idling it selects neutral?

I am just guessing, but it could be a possibility?

Thanks - I would'nt say I was idling that long though. If it were this problem then I should be able to select 1st without any trouble. Unfortunatley I could'nt without switching off the engine and restarting - even this took two or three attempts.

Hey ho looks like it may be going any sale, any takers?
