Hi Everyone,

1,8 Stilo frm 2002 there is a small crunch when changing into the third gear .the clutch is a bit loose but it has been the same way since i bought it(i.e no crunch but clutch was loose). now the local Fiat dealer wants to change the third Gear Gear Syncho and Clutch which would set back arround 1600.

another garage means thats it could be clutch but they are not sure.i'm leaning towards the clutch but would appericate your opinions.

Thanks,

Can you get it into 1st (or all) gears when stationary and engine running without crunching??

Does it slip when you have high gear and lots of acc pedal on?

If you can get it in to gears and it doesn't slip , how can it be clutch ?? I don't know what you mean by 'loose'

Is 3rd only gear it crunches?? if so, it sounds like worn synchro baulk rings. If so = expensive.

Replacement of a scrapped unit may be cheaper option. Could even do it yourself. Gearbox internal parts are notoriously expensive, you have to buy them from Fiat (typically no where else will do them) and they are a pain to do.

Loose means its not the way it should be you have to press it deep into the floor to get it working.i can get it into all gears without crunching normally a small crunch at the reverse gear but if you press it deep enough then no problems.

no slipping at all.

i'm going to call a breaker which parts should i ask for ? maybe a complete gear box or ???...is it something a local/cheaper non-fiat garage can do that ?

Thanks

How far up does the pedal come off the floor before the clutch bites :chin:

Gearbox parts will take you ages to get hold of and will as Ste has said be very expensive ..

So, now you're explained 'loose' it sounds as if the clutch systems needs bleeding - does it feel 'spongy'? or soft.

I meant replace the whole gearbox if necessary, it would be much quicker and easier = less expensive.

As others have said sounds like a clutch issue or you're simply not using the clutch properly (seat position etc).

This wont do any gearbox any good so you want to get on top of this first.

Do you have Stilo carpet mats fitted, as I have this problem when the mat rises up and stops the clutch going all the way down..... try pulling the mats down a bit..works on mine and hell of a lot cheaper than a new clutch!!!!!

Original Fiat Mats should come with clips which you screw into the existing carpet (drivers side only). In fact, I think some of the early Stilos already came with the clips fitted.

These are original mats, but no clips to screw into the carpet.... yet another thing to moan about then ;) Serves me right for buying a demonstartor.... was also ripped off with the sat nav disk, dealer must have kept the up to date one....but thanks to here all that's changed. :D

That's a classic "clutch needs bleeding" symptom just as Stile Ste says. 3rd seems to "catch" the most on the Stilo 1.6 and 1.8 gearboxes and if you're lucky you may not have damaged the 3rd gear synchro. Have a look in the Stilo Guides for a look at how to bleed it from the slave cylinder, nice and easy 5 min job. You shpuld notice your bite point come up much higher

If it IS that then you will have a much nicer driving car and more comfortable time with your clutch and changing gear all through the box

Fingers crossed you haven't left it too late to prevent damage. Do it rightaway

LOL i was just about to say the same thing, mine was a wee bit of air in the system and it caused 3rd to crunch slightly. Its about the only job on the stilo that easy.
