Abarth Fault Codes Help Please!!!

Hi Guys,

My 2002 Stilo Abarth has just developed the fault of occasionally not starting when the key is turned. The engine turns over but the engine does not fire. A couple of times, locking/unlocking the doors seems to clear the fault however last week, the bloody thing just wouldn't start. I called the AA out who plugged it into the fault diagnosis and it came up with the fault codes P0340, P0571 and P1653. The first two cleared but the 3rd one, (P1653) remains although the car started. The car now has refused to start again but after several unlock/lock attempts, the car eventually started. Any Ideas as to what is going on, or is it an expensive trip to FIAT for a diagnosis??
Thanks
Tony

Re: Abarth Fault Codes Help Please!!!

P1653 - power steering output circuit malfunction
P0340 - camshaft position sensor circuit malfunction
P0571 - cruise sontrol/brake switch A circuit malfunction

Don't know if these are any help at all  seems a bit strange that they all should come on at the same time though?

Re: Abarth Fault Codes Help Please!!!

I think that 1st one is often due to low battery volts or a bad earth connection (which of course is the same thing)

Re: Abarth Fault Codes Help Please!!!

P1653 would not cause the car to not-start (i.e. it would fire up but the screen would display "Electronic Power Steering Fault").

P0571 - One assumes you have Selespeed, and this fault would mean that the car could be jamming the car in gear (as it wouldn't register that your foot is on the brake), hence the engine would not start. I'd replace it anyway, it's a common issue and cheap to sort.

P0340 - this would almost certainly cause the engine not to start, and would also display an "Engine Fault" message. Do you get this?

Had no faults reported on screen at all apart from the bloody parking sensors! Yes it is a selespeed.
Overall from what you say, i'd go for option 2 the brake sensor, how easy is it for a complete novice to sort? The car is in for it's MOT tomorrow, should I get them to tie it in with that?

Thanks for the answers though.

Hey Swiss

It's a possible job - there is a guide in the "Guides" section at the top. If it were me though, I'd get FIAT to do it - big hands! :p

Re: Abarth Fault Codes Help Please!!!

Hi Folks,

Just been out to the car and once again it won't start and comes back with fault code P0340 and U1653, both cleared, still wont start!! Rocked car back and forward in gear, now it starts! How am I gonna cure this problem without a trip to FIAT???

Any help please will be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Can anyone tell me where this sensor is and how difficult it is to renew it have been told it is faulty by AA the code P0340 this morning have ordered the part £67 just need to fit it ,is there any links to pictures showing location as all i can see is the blue connector by the fuel rail i have e-learn but cant find it on there ?? Any help would be great :worship:
thanks

I'm guessing you've got a 1.8?

If so, bad luck, it's behind the one of the cam pulleys (cambelt off job).

Incidently, what's the fault? Is it a non-start with the error along the lines of "signal not valid/ coherance with RPM sensor"? If so this points to slipped cambelt timing.

No car starts and runs fine the dash just flashes up the orange engine sign and the code read a p0340 ??
Dont know what to do is it behind the inlet or exhaust pulley ???
Thanks
