Hi,
Can any one tell me how easy it is to change the front discs on my Stilo JTD?

Also can any one recomend a better price of £60 for 2 discs and pads?

Thanks in advance:)

Short and sweet eh Dave ;) I think I did a more detailed one for Chris Clark ..have a search and see if you can find it (y)

ive done a more detailed one some where, not done it as a guide yet as i have no photos to go with it

Pics arn't that important as long as the details are clear and concise and easy to follow (y) and a long as the person has some mechanical knowledge ..that does help of course :D ;)

£54 for mintex brakes on ebay, the disks are good the pads are a bit hard for my liking, just got some Green Stuff pads for the front, gonna put them in when the sun comes out... if it ever does... far too wet out there at the moment.

Changing the disks is an easy job, 3 bolts not including the wheel nuts. 7 in all!

Jack it up (pref: 2 tonne jack) place wheel under the side of the car

4 bolts on the wheels, taken em out... take wheel off

2 bolts on the back of the callipur... (theres only 2 fairly large sized bolts on the back... the same size vertical to the wheel arch) you might have to give the ratchet arm a smack with a rubber mallet with these.

Dont forget to tie up the callipur (i usually tie it to the suspension spring with some wire but good string will do the job) as to reduce stress on the brake hose. DONT let it hang on the hose alone!

1 odd little bolt on the front of the disk... its a wheel mount positioner nut by day... but by night it holds your brake disks on... take that out and the disk comes off

(Advice... try to get pads with rubber backing pad... this will illiminate brake squeel) Mintex dont have the rubber pads, but like i said the disk are good enough.

Changing the pads as you go is easy, whilst the callipur is tied up prise out the pads from the silver couplings. To get the new pads in with enough gap to allow for the new disk loosen the brake fluid reservior cap under the bonnet and push the callipur back into the housing. (the front callipur pushes in unlike the rear which rotate in)

Reasembly is the reverse of this.

You may find it a little fiddley getting the pads into the silver couplings but you can do it.

Took me about 30mins a wheel at a casual pace on a sunny day.

Indeed you did, and very heplful it was...the best thing was it even passed it's MOT, so I'm not that much of a moose as far as brakes brakes go

Dead easy to do, but certain bits can take some, ahem, 'gentle persuasion'. With a mallet. A big f*cking mallet. A rubber one.

Errrm what was the mallet for Chris :chin: and @ mortgage man click on the link on the bottom of my post and view the brakes section I have just written a guide for replacing the discs and pads on a jtd ..veiwing is free and none obligatory ..

I've got the Mintex brake package on the front and they squeal like a banshee when warm. Still, damn good stopping power and I dont care if they are noisy.

Surely there is a market for vulcanised self adhesive rubber anti squeal backing stickers open for abuse.

Apparently you can buy anti squeal kits.

So the market has been catered for.....damn there goes my money spinner. I was going to make a stainless steel shim with a solid rubber backing that could be bonded on to the pad.

Just when you come up with an idea, you always find someone has got there first. BAH!

I got some red rubber in a sqeezy bottle from the states made by siloo for stopping brake squeel. You squirt it in the rear of the pad and let it dry... it worked for about two hours then the squeel back it came.

Total waste of £3.50

One more star on my ebay account tho.

Thank you very much for your help, i can't beleive it's that easy, i thought i was missing something?

Thanks a million.
