abs, esp, asr fault

I have the following problem i can just start the car and upon braking out of the drive i get 3 beeps warning light with asb fault followed by esp and asr faults. This can happen straight away or an hr into a long drive so wouldnt appear to be a serious issue id imagine?

In addition i keep getting an engine fault flashing on usually at 2500rpm in 4th gear, but doesnt stay on or cause any problem, after this was checked out it was narrowed down to the egr valve and the garage said it could go tommorrow or in a few years so probably best to leave it.

Re: abs, esp, asr fault

ABS fault is most likely brake light switch - had the same problem myself. It'll get worse and eventually become constant.

No idea about egr valve, sorry!

Re: abs, esp, asr fault

The new phenomenon has born :)

My Stilo did it second time today. I shifted again the reverse gear, and the car started beeping abs, esp, asr fault, but the spanners werent flashing!!!! It was only beeping!

I shifted the neutral gear and pressed the ASR button twice aaaaannnnndddd it stopped beeping, and worked normally!

Re: abs, esp, asr fault

I had same problem with ESP, ABS flashing and beeping almost every time when breaking and when hit some bump on the road. It was problem with the loose earth connector on the battery.

Re: abs, esp, asr fault

Which earth connector on the battery??? Do you mean the main "earth" cable from battery?

Hello all

After eight weeks of constant problems and bills I am selling the Stilo.
But the guy who is buying it will not fork out the cash unless the before mentioned fault is fixed.

Went to FIAT yesterday and they cleared the fault and said if it was intermittent the fault would not reappear but this morning it is back.
Fiat said the part to solve the problem costs between £500 and £600

HELP!

So you're selling the Stilo because of lots of problems with it but you want to sort those problems before you sell it

Are you sure the garage didn't say to you "there's no point clearing an intermittent fault as it will only reoccur!" ?

Hello Argo

This weeks problem is one in a long list and with the faults being so concentrated over the last 8 weeks it has left me with no option but to sell it.

Dont get me wrong i love the car but its breaking my heart with these constant errors

I just want this guy to come and collect the car on Sat and not have the abs, asr, esp fault showing and putting him off!

I think it may be time for a new battery, going by the linked threads!

I had a new brake switch fitted 3 weeks ago. Maybe from the time i disconnected the battery for the alarm failure!

First thing I'd do is clean all electrical connections aroung the battery and grease them back up before reconnecting. Free and easy 15 min job and always worked for me when I had my Stilo.

OK I will clean the battery terminals etc

Rich, when i unscrew the cover behind the battery is the d4 visable.

Discribe it?

on mine it was simply a faulty brake light switch at the top of the pedal. job done!!!

My problem with ABS/ESP started yesterday. I was driving back home and suddenly I've got beeping sound and then ABS/ESP signal lights on the dash went on. This morning, I started the engine and again I got beeping and ABS/ESP signal lights went on. I have seen that this topic was on the forum some 3 years back and what was posted back then really worried me. It seems that Fiat was not able to find out what was the problem. There were reasons such as:

1. break light switch was broke
2. air conditioning fluid was low
3. steering wheel angle sensor needed readjustment
4. battery needed to be replaced
5. DIDN’T KNOW WHAT WAS CAUSING THE PROBLEM

I would like to hear are there any updates on the topic and how much did it cost to solve different problems causing ABS/ESP failures.

Fiat Stilo 1.6 Active, 5 d. 2001.
