Check your plug gaps next. The harder your coil has to work the more it will tend to break down internally. Electricity is lazy and finds the easiest route- "A bit too much of a jump that way- think I'll go this way instead"
BAM another £40

That's one reason I'm trying Bosch Super 4 plugs. Gives the spark four alternatives before it decides to wreck the coil...
 
Hi - first post here

just replaced one of the coils today. The spare one I had was bought from the dealer.

seemed slightly different to one I was replacing - the new coil was mostly rubber. Old coil was Sagem - the new one has Ricambi on the box.

Anyway - when relaced the chugging stopped and the engine light went off after a few starts. When I started driving again though it went on me again after 2 minutes! chugging started again! the number plate bulb went as well (id imagine this is a coincidence)

Have I made an arse of this?

Appreciate any advice!

Well, bear i mind it could be the plug and not the coil that made it misfire.
When you're testing which coil, if you're not sure whether it's gone or not, swop it with the next coil to it and see if the fault swops over with it.

A bad coil smells of burning bakelite as it's firing through the plastic insulation.

It could even be a different coil or plug gone down by coincidence.
Check all your plugs, put new ones in if you're not sure, they're not that expensive and then do your coil test. Worn out plugs put a big strain on the coils

Difficult to imagine you getting the wrong coil or it fitting properly if you did.

Fiat use the Sagem as they are cheap crap, i paid about £30 each and fitted them myself. As easy as fitting a spark plug, go to your garage and they will want £100 to fit 1..........(n)

I think you will find Sagem are fitted by many motor manufactures & are not cheaper than any other make.Coils (like sagem) often fail due to outside circumstances...I have also seen champion coils fail.However champion coils do certainly seem more reliable than sagem.
 
My 1.6 started running like a bag of nails this morning, the the engine fault flashing and beeping every 10 seconds. Plugged in my code reader and found intermittent ignition on cylinder 1. Swapped it over with cylinder 4 to check it was the coil pack, which it was.

Fortunately there is a auto factors across the road from where I work (GSF Car Parts) and they had a Beru unit in stock for £24 including vat. Plugged it in and the car is running smoothly again. Don't know what the quality of a Beru coil is, but got me running again at quit a low cost.

Im pretty sure this is somewhere but having trouble finding it in the threads but does anyone have the full intructions ( +diagrams) for checking and changing coils? sorry if this is a old boring question but come march I wanna replace the lot if they are these infamous Sagem coils! so any help in checking them(to see what make they are)and replacing will be very much appreciated, I have an 02' Abarth with only 15k on clock(yes i know its extremley low mileage for a car 5 yrs old) but in the service book the previous owner seemed very paranoid about servicing and had it done quite a few times at a FIAT dealer so maybe I will get lucky and they will be Champion ones! you never know eh!!?

1. Shut off engine.
2. Open bonnet.
3. Remove engine cover (if present).
4. Unclip a clip.
5. Pull up a coil (use a 10 mm spanner etc. to remove bolt first).
6. Read producer's name on coil.
 
My wife drives a Renault laguna and I've changed a few coils in the past & found the 'Beru's' seem to last longer than the OEM 'Sagem' ones ,if that's any help.
