Got a 02 abarth, today whilst parking it in first it came up with gearbox failure and the ASR light remained on.
Later on when I went to drive it again it did it for the remainder of the journey (around fifteen minutes). However I was able to drive it in manual using the gearbox, then using the paddles and also in auto so appears fine?

I've looked through the forum for similar causes and some people have said they couldnt use the paddles or it was stuck in a gear etc but I dont get any of this. As any abarth owner will know, I've had countless warning messages pop up which have meant didly squat and have since never come back. Is this another cause of phantom mesages which will appear for a bit then go or is this actually something serious?

!

Have a check of the selespeed fluid level as the gearbox is an electrically controlled unit which uses an actuator to change gear on the car ..you can get this reconfigured /reset by fiat if this is the fault :)

I checked that and all is fine. Needless to say been driving it for the past week and its hasnt happened again. Who knows I might even be able to make it through a month without the ****ing thing bleeping at me!

:bang:

The fact that you're getting an ASR fault would suggest to me that this could be a non sole-selespeed fault.

Have you ever had the brake light switch changed? Anything notable happen prior to the fault?

Whilst I was having tyres fitted on my MW, an Abarth came in for tyres also, when it was up on the ramp, the fitter needed to move it back slightly, he selected reverse, the display said reverse, but the selespeed selected 1st. The car shot forward , fortunately the fitter hit the brakes in time, before a catastrophy occured.:shakehead

According to the owner this was his 2nd selespeed box in 12 months.....

Think I'll stick to a JTD manual :D

I had a back break light replaced about 4 months ago but as far as know thats it, the switch wasnt changed to my knowledge. Alas I spoke to soon, it did it again last night. It was only serviced 2 months ago :(

I think another trip to Fiat is in order

Replace the break light switch, this happened to me straight after a 24k service, costs very little and the problem went away and has not returned yet, mind you I've since donated the car to my step-daughter, but she's not reported any problems yet...
