first problem:
constant squeaking from a rear wheel, which stops when the brakes are applied
what do you think that is? warped disc?

second problem:
clutch gives out a short squeak when i bring it up, is this quite major? new clutch soon?

thanks for all your helpl, this forum is *does frosties advert voice* ggggreeeaaat! (y)

Yes there's a few sources of squeaks to try on the clutch.

Squeaks when depressing the pedal
Slave cylinder is usually when you push the pedal down and a feeling of vibration too through the pedal as the piston moves along a dry surface under load. Greasing inside the slave cylinder bore does the job

Squeaking when you are raising the pedal.
First of all make sure the pedal isn't just rubbing against the over foot panel. If it is (like mine did) then take the panel off and throw it away (like i did:) )
More room for your feet and you'll find you can hear your indicators better too. See where it was rubbing here? Check yours too

Last one is actually in the pedal assembly itself. There is a ball end where the cable meets the pedal and this can creak horribly Some grease sorts it

REAR BRAKES
Needs a wheel off and have an inspection. More often copper grease on the back of the pads cures squealing but as yours stops when you apply the brakes then you may have a sticky caliper piston, warped disc, or just a material on the pads that likes squealing. I had to change my front pads after trying everything in the book to stop the squealing. Some pads just do!
Read up on changing the rear pads before attempting it though. Nowhere near as easy as the fronts

Dipping the whole car in oil will cure the squeaks you are hearing, maybe.

Is it a squealing clutch? Does it scream when you slide it, or is it just pedal movement noise?

If the clutch is squealing when you slide it, this could indicate a worn clutch thrust or 'throwout' bearing. Nothing thats gonna go bang in the next few minutes, but worthwhile keeping an eye on. If the noise gets louder, its time to replace the clutch and bearing. Total failure of the thrust bearing can result in the clutch destroying itself and could lead to gearbox issues.

Now don't frighten the poor chap.:)
If it just squeaks when you move the clutch pedal with the engine switched off then it won't be clutch release bearing.

If it's squealing horribly and continuing to squeal when you hold the clutch at the bite with engine running then it's time to get your cheque book out

Do what Decks says.

'They say he can turn stilton cheese into Turtlewax. Some say he uses hedgehogs to clean the bugs off his windscreen. Some even say he can blow the spoiler off a Golf at 300 paces.........all we know is.......he's called the Deckchair!'

The Deckchair ROCKS :slayer: :slayer: :slayer:

Aw shucks.
I should think the amount saved by just Stilo owners would run into £1000s each week with this friendly forum.

Perhaps a timely reminder that donations to the Fiat forum help keep everything alive. If you imagine just donating a very small portion of what you saved anyway through help from the forum then every little helps keep the forum going.

Just scroll up on the home page to "Donation to FIATFORUM.COM"

Imagine what Fiat ownership would be like without Fiat forum:cry:

Time for a signature change Decks?? :D

thanks again for all your help!(y)

in terms of the clutch, it is squealing
i get a painful squealing noise at biting point, it's very loud, and it's not coming from the interior/pedal, although i do also have that creaking noise when the engine is off! flippin heck

you got that right:eek:
thanks for the advice about the rear brakes too decks :)

Is is unlikely that you will damage your box. Just get a new clutch.

Do you get any judder at biting point?

The two are not related. Make sure you have enough oil in the engine and be gentle with it especially when cold. Sometimes, hydraulic tappets in the cam followers take some time to get up to pressure. An oil filter change and new oil can sometimes solve this. The tappets can also get clogged. An engine flush can sometimes cure this although there are debates as to whether flushing can do more harm than good. Personally, I have never had a bad experience with flushing (correctly performed).

The older VW/Audi engines used to clank away like a goodun for a few seconds until operating oil pressure was reached. They did benefit from a new oil pump/filter and a flush which reduced this to about a second.

As for the clutch, I would see how it goes. There is always a possibility that one of the clutch plates itself has an impurity or contaminant in it that could wear away in time. If the noise starts getting worse to the point of embarrassment, then it could be time for a clutch change.

Naturally, it would be good if the Deckchair could help me out on this one as I'm not up on Stilos, just engines in general.

Just to put you at ease, these issues are not just Stilo related and can occur on any make/model of vehicle.

You could have gone and bought an Astra and cursed yourself for life!
