Dealing with the 'Preheat Fault' message [Stilo JTD]

Glow plugs (or heater plugs) are used to warm the cylinder on cold mornings when starting a diesel. Unlike spark plugs, which are used continuously in an engine and therefore wear out over time, a glow plug is more like a light bulb and they either work perfectly or they donít work at all.<br />

Re: Dealing with the 'Preheat Fault' message [Stilo JTD]

I have diagnosed the BLACK wire as the faulty plug - number 3 cylinder. Any hints on gaining access? I tried but it seems impossible on a Stilo 04 Does the EGR valve come off to get in there?

any suggestions would be good.

Re: Dealing with the 'Preheat Fault' message [Stilo JTD]

hi, its more than 1 week my doesn't start. I have check code and got more than 3 error. After keep reading around the net, most of error gone mostly connector. The last error was P0380 glow plug low. Check it and only No 3 got reading = 345??. No. 1 & 2 = 0000 and no 4 = O.L, I will check again today if relay is working.

For info, my car start worst when the starter loose after crank 1 or 2 time.. i think another issue here.

anyway very good OP here, very thanks..

Re: Dealing with the 'Preheat Fault' message [Stilo JTD]

Hi, very helpful thread, had mine done about a week ago, used it a lot but STILL have light and message flash? Any ideas? Shall I disconnect the battery? Will it "forget" the fault?

Thanks

chris

Great Guide! I've added some photos on the setup of the Grande Punto 1.9 MJet for those that might come across this guide for the Stilo and wonder if it's the same in GP:

Re: Dealing with the 'Preheat Fault' message [Stilo JTD]

Good guide thanks. I made mine pin 4 on the relay plug BUT the red wire is on top of the glow plug/cylinder 4 closest to the battery in the bay.

I suppose that means it could be either Cylinder 4 if I follow my head/wire colour or cylinder 1 if I follow the original post.

It's in at fiat now so I will know soon.

Re: Dealing with the 'Preheat Fault' message [Stilo JTD]

To finish off this post, my red wire on my Punto did go to Cylinder 4 nearest the battery, rather than cyl 1 in the OP.

I Suggest following the wires to confirm where it goes before telling the dealer which one to replace.

Re: Dealing with the 'Preheat Fault' message [Stilo JTD]

I'm hopeless with electrickery...

How does this test the glow-plug..?

It looks like the metre is connecting the glowplug (via the wire to the connector block) directly to earth (the engine block). Shouldn't it be in-line with some current or something?

i.e. What electrical circuit is there between the connector block (which is connected to the glow-plug but not to a live/battery) and earth? I'm confused..

Be warned that someone did have a go but ended up with their car being off the road for a while (damaged the injection pipework)

Having the correct tools is critical.
Easy job with loads of 1/4" drive sockets and extensions. No need to remove any fuel lines and so on. It "only" took me 1 hour to do 4 of them. Next time I do it I will make pictures.

Hi

I'm going to put some images on here and a breakdown of how it's done. It only took twenty mins for the 4. A coat hanger and rubber hose are useful to lift the plugs in and out but they're more accessible than people think.

A breakdown of how to replace the glow plugs, with images, is already in post 7 above.
