new ads under 1st post

its really annoying

if we all refuse to click on them the advertisers should get the hint and stop advertising on FF eventually.

oh in that case click away. i thought you only get paid if we visit AND buy, if its a pay per click arrangement just tell everyone and i'm sure we can get a few million clicks in no time :D

how about a subscription option to remove all ads? i'd be willing to pay to remove them. you need $760 per month, so thats $9120 per year. if 1000 members pay $10 per year you're in profit before you even consider advertising for unpaid members. i know i'd be willing to pay $10 per year to have no adverts. its only £5, i spend that much getting to work every day.

:yeahthat:

Cheers Jug for working that out, was going to do that before I saw your post :)

You already give extra features to members who have been kind enough to donate, why not just make it a subscription? Personally I have no issue in forking even £10 a year, there is always plenty to read and debate :D

*Goes to make another donation anyway, just realised it's nearly two years since I gave anything, my bad*

Whilst it's a nice idea, problem is I don't think we have 1000 members who would do that ;) But hey, it's early days yet - options are being looked into...

I must admit, I just get a bit teed off with people who complain about one or two ads to scroll past, yet I'm the one forking out £££'s to keep the place going (but you won't hear me whine about it) - that's all .

Too many users expect things for free and grumble when the people who dedicate their time and money to providing the service make some changes so they can generate some revenue to keep the site going. Maybe create a name and shame board for those moaners? :D

Just went to see what the Skoda Owners Forum offer for paying. They do have a yearly subscription scheme for £12 per annum. For that they chuck in:

FREEDOM - An enhancement which gives you access to all of the present normal registered features plus:
  • The satisfaction of knowing you are supporting BRISKODA (the primary reason to contribute)
  • Exclusive Freedom Talk forum, 99.9% unmoderated.
  • Opens up your account to access your own @briskoda.net email account and web interface (Gmail over 2000Mb of storage).
  • Advanced notice of our events with priority booking and discounted ticket price.
  • First access to our promotions / group buys.
  • Access a gowing list of discounters, suggest one we'll investigate it...
  • A journal to show of your projects, car related or not.
  • Access to the latest developments on the site.
    • Forum Filters, hide those forums you really have no interest in.
    • Gallery access, over 20Mb of storage.
    • Extra PM and attachment space, over 20Mb of attachments.
    • Tyre Calculator, see what tyres fit and impact of your choice.
    • Ask a Tech - Forum.
    • Use of the classifieds, Items for Sale forums.
    • more as the site grows...
As you said it's always an option for the future. Why not create a poll to gain some user feedback?

Def look into it - though I always hated the idea of having to pay for a site to use it. At present, any user can do anything - maybe we are taken advantage of sometimes, I don't know.

One issue that does crop up though is related to discounts, we get quite a few companies offering them, but only if we have a "paid for membership". So I guess this could be done if we had a subscription system.....

I'll have a ponder, but it's unlikely the google ads will go - sorry!

By all means click an ad if you actually find it useful, but dont do millions of them just to rack up the clicks. Google are smart and it will just put us in danger of getting pushed off adsense ...

it bugged the hell out of me to start with, but hey, its just some more scrolling, tis not doing any harm. like any new feature, takes some getting used to.

pretty soon we'l be that used to it, that if the feature were to get removed, we'd end up scrolling past and ignoring every second post on a thread :p

You know the servers for this place are about to cost $760 a month to run, right ... ?

Seems to me you don't make it very obvious how to donate. I just spent some time looking and can't see anything in the links at the top of the page.

If you search the site on "donate" it doesn't bring up a link that tells you how.

If you click on the little trophy that says someone has donated, as new people may do out of curiosity, it doesn't take you anywhere.

I'd donated before, the only obvious way I could see is to find a post by someone who hasn't donated and click on the link below their name.

Perhaps donations will increase if if is more explicit/easy.

The first time I donated I just clicked on the 5.00 link on the opening page, perhaps it should be clear there that if you want to alter the sum it can be done there, I found that paypal wouldn't allow me to edit the amount. I didn't try that this time so you may have altered it. But if people want to give more they may not bother and just give the fiver, those that want to give less may just back out.

Peter

The donation link is on the home page

So it is, but I only noticed it because you told me. I haven't noticed in a year of posting on here! And I did just just go look, my expectation was to find the link in the top banner with guides, events, chat etc. I think making the "has donated" thing a link may be effective. After all Ben wants to net as many people as possible.
