What we need is a sat nav forum for example poi (points of intrest files) we can download on to our sat navs eg fiat dealers, speed cameras and low bridges for those of us who tow tin tents (caravans) i am currently working on a dealer poi for tom tom sat nav units and hope to have it ready soon in the meantime if any member wants help with sat nav issues really experienced on tom tom systems i have a small knowledge of others please pm me and i will try to help

just also found tom tom go 910 as used by myself this is the top of the range all singing /dancing tom tom unit is now available for £288 at pc worlds website once again you must enter a code in the promo box to get it for this price the code is SATNAV10OFF make s ure if purchasing you choose free home delivery as this code does not work with items selected for store pick up. this is a cheap price i payed nearly £500 for mine in july.but still say this unit is worth every penny

I think that a sat-nav section would be a great idea, if only because I got a Tomtom Go for my Christmas & don't have a scoobie! I can run all the basic functions, but when it comes to optimising usage and being able to add on speed cameras etc I'm out of my depth. I checked out the pocket gps site and it seems helpful but very very technical and that can be a problem, I'm relatively computer-literate but it's not the most user-friendly when you have just taken a unit out of a box for the first time!

killyourmama i am very experienced on tomtom systems if you need help drop me a pm and i will help you add speed cams voices poi,s etc to your unit.

but before you try to do anything back up your system as sometimes adding extras can knock the system out

Has anyone any knowledge on the Route 66 Chicago 6000 which is now £179 inc vat. Was £379.00!! Include free speed camera and euro maps. Sold by Halfrauds.

Andy.:)

hi sumplug have researched this model for you and although it appears to be a good budget priced unit it does have flaws 1 it is noted that the sound quality is poor on this unit 2 i have it on good authority that free upgrades on this model only cover the software and not the mapping for mapping upgrades you will be charged basically if it was me investing your 179.99 i would look at garmin or tomtom units as these companys have been involved with sat nav from day one and have tried and tested products anyway good luck and ihope you find a system that suits your needs

as an alternative the tomtom go 510 is currently available on pc worlds website for £215 when you use the code satnav10off

I run Tomtom on my sony erriccson phone, I have the latest western europe complete map version 6.60 and most POI files on my PC. I am a pocketgpsworld member and as such get the speed cameras updates twice a month, its a real licence saver as it also has a correct speed display on it. I have friends who have used other sat navs but none seem to have the complete package like the tomtom units, and all have gone back to tomtom. I have made several POI files but alot of them are copyrighted, particularly the speed camera ones, so how could a website such as this sell files it doesnt own the copyright to? Also if the files are donated to the forum then who will keep them up to date? Also there are already fiat dealer POI files on the internet.

i agree that on the idea of selling files we may have run before we have walked but the original idea of my post was a forum where,by we could provide technical advice and support to forum members on sat nav issues and that we could also support members by telling them where suitable poi,s and voice files and updates may be obtained. also we could post prices and reveiws on sat nav systems ther,by helping those new to the world of sat nav to overcome a lot of problems. yes there are poi,s for fiat dealerships available but a lot are now out of date raising your issue of who would update them if we posted them here? my only answer to this would be that if there where members of the forum intrested in running a sat nav section maybe we could all come together and try and organise something.

After a lot of mooching around the net finally settled on TTOne Europe & 12 months Safety Camera subscription (20 quid). Like KYM still gotta look into things like adding speed cameras and deleting the 3 petrol stations from the POI's that have been bulldozed locally (n)

@RD Yeah I see lots of speed cameras, often obsecured by tress and foliage or poorly positioned, with no bits of painted circular tin anywhere near to give you a clue as to what speed you should actually be adhering to :bang: Just decided after neigh on 20 years of motoring with only one SP30 (back in '89) and feeling like I have recently been spending too much time pondering if im gonna get an expensive photo through the post to try and keep my licence clean (y)

maybe we could make a cd rom of the poi files and sell them to raise money for the site

if you use tomtom i have many files that you can use and if anyone wants tomtom mobile 5 or the 6 just pm me and i will see what in can do as i do have the tomtom 5 and 6 to run on all series 60 symbian nokia phones ie the N series and all or most series 60 devices and 66 on my pc for mobile phones...you do need a blutooth gps receiver though to use this on your mobile...

Brilliant, thanks Rick!

Backed up everything today, been working my @rse off recently so maybe drop you a PM next week for POI/camera advice if that's ok?
:D

BTW, if I don't say it anywhere else, Happy New Year to all on FF- finding it, and the people on it, has been one of the highlights of an otherwise forgettable year!

Just an idea, but seeing as this isn't really a proper website as such, and is just a forum, have you considered having a proper website and using phpNuke?

I use it for my classic mini site and you get lots of different sections to use for different things, downloads, links, news postings, shop, classifieds, auction, members journal, etc etc.

It's easy to install and runs on mySQL database, so is easy to maintain.

You can add to the downloads section who is permitted to download, but if you made it for subscribers only it might put some people off.

If you do decide to expand the 'site' and go 'nuke' then you need Sentinel which is a downloadable security program that protects nuke sites against hackers. I can recommend it, it's the best security program out there for nuke sites.

vbAdvanced is ok but it's not really advanced enough for a proper inter active website, you need a dedicated script like NUKE to do that and to cope with the traffic.

Don't mean to be patronising, I just design websites for a living so know quite a bit about portals and site design.

I was about to sign up to PocketGPSworld to download the speed camera database, was just wondering if this is the best option, is there anywhere else around more detailed or cheaper? I thought I'd have difficulty installing the initial POI database, but I guess I underestimated myself, it was pretty simple!
:D
I think the idea of sharing some of the non-copyrighted files on the site, even selling them to help the site, is a good 'un, though I'm not overly clued-up on the logistics/legality of the whole idea.

Also, does anyone know where I could get different voices? I've nothing against Jane, but thought it's be fun to find some other ones to try out, really just want to personalise the unit a bit!

I bought a navman 570 for £99 from Halfords, not only do you get a PDA ,which I now use for e books and MP3's but you get a good satnav system,it is loud enough to hear and does a good job of getting you from A to B using the SmartST system. I have also loaded Tomtom navigator 6 onto the system and that works just as well.Choice of two systems -can't be bad:)

I still think Sat Navs are way over priced. I here they make them for little money. I wonder when prices are set to tumble? And is it still true that the Government are still set to ban all speed camera detectors?

Andy.

Not GPS units, just likely to be laser based ones.

You can get a PDA/sat nav unit for £99 (!!!) can't complain there really.

the stuff is available from pocket gps world but people have trouble installing it so maybe we could help them

there is already a forum specifically for this, with far more capable people offering advice than we could ever dream of: http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums

there are so many other sites dedicated solely to downloading and using POI's and other sat nav add ons and updates, and torrent and P2P networks are also stuffed full of sat nav files to download (inlcuding cracked sat nav software like tomtom). plus ebay is full of it as well (people download stuff then sell it so lazy people dont need to download it). why do we need to offer what is already widely available elsewhere? how can you expect to charge for something that is already free elsewhere? most importantly, how is it relevant to fiat?

i'm still confused why we have a computing section. whats next? a vauxhall section!? maybe a section for fashion tips? how about a hardcore porn section? it seems many users think of fiatforum as the place to ask about anything. ask google instead, you get better answers. leave fiatforum for fiats, thats the whole point isnt it
