Why images HAVE TO be from gallery ?

Hi all

Today I updated my member motor thread and I can't link my images from my hosted web server.
Why these restrictions ?
I read a thread about slow loading, etc... But Internet is made like this, link and images - not always on the same servers.

Don't really understand the reason. I post my images on many forums, I have them centralized on my web server, don't want to manage this for all forums.

It's possible to change this ?

See you

The reason is very simple, its because as soon as you've deleted or moved your externally hosted photographs your MM thread will have missing pics left right and center.

TBH its something all forums should have as a rule and something we should be pushing for on all threads IMO. Nothing more annoying than missing or deleted photobucket pics etc.

We also can't rely on external hosting sites to always follow the same URL conventions, so even if you never delete your pictures the host could change something and render your thread useless without you even knowing.

Re: Why images HAVE TO be from gallery ?

You can provide a hosting function, but not oblige people to use it. Internet is free, and people can choose how they like using it.

I understand that we can't rely on free sites they host pictures, they want to make money, and it's ads heavy and not reliable.

But in my case, it's a simple URL : http://path/image.jpg.
What's wrong with this ?

Yes perhaps I can deletes images and the thread has missing pictures - but if I maintain my thread this will not happen - and if I don't maintain it it will drop in the bottom of forum. A 5 years old member's motor thread never update has no more sense.
More of this, I want to have the control of my picture - I can manage them, delete them if I want. After all, they are my pictures.

Please think of this - too much rules is not in good thing for the forum. Leave people free as it's possible. An organization is needed of course, and this forum is great for this. But this is going to far.

Re: Why images HAVE TO be from gallery ?

In 12 years, you're the only person to find that it's going too far

The point is though, that whether a thread is maintained by the OP or not is still has value - often members will look through old threads for ideas, and if the relevant pictures are missing that thread then becomes utterly useless. It's not a rule that's been added solely for the purpose of inconveniencing users, and it's a not a rule that any single user is likely to be made exempt from, no matter how organised they promise to be.

Re: Why images HAVE TO be from gallery ?

Perhaps I'm a bit "special" ?

Seriously, if I am the only one it is not for 12 years : in 2013 I posted pics linked on my server - and they are still alive as you can see

I don't ask to be exempt, rules are for everyone. I simply ask to propose pic hosting - not oblige to use it - and for everyone.
This make sense : if you don't know how to host pictures, you will use the default option that is offered.
If you know how too, you have the choice to link your pictures.

For one thing I understand your point of view : for guides. A guide without pictures, it's not a good guide anymore. And a guide can be useful ten years or more.

But for other section, please consider my request.
If it's not possible, I will not update anymore my thread and I will remove it. Not a big deal for fiatforum, not a big deal for me as I have not to host my pics two times.

So are you

That's like saying, Its good to have a 30mph speed limit but as I'm a careful driver I can drive at the speed I want to. Rules are rules, obey them or go elsewhere, seems simple to me.

I will stop posting pics and update my member motors thread, that's all (not a real problem, as I said before).
I'm here to discuss, explain my point of view; you are here to make the forum as best as you can, hear other people and not only what you mind.
Take account of this, not everybody will be happy, but this is difficult to do so.

But years are going and Internet is with less and less freedom. The other day, one of my posts was removed on a french forum because it was a linked to FiatForum ! Not a commercial link, just a link to a guide - to help someone to solve his problem ! (however my message was restored after discussion).
With your picture politic, it's just the step before

It's just basic thinking
Speeding is a safety problem. Posting pics on other sites not

I'm on a forum to discuss, we don't always have the same point of view, it's the life. Rules are here to make the forum good, the best possible.
But remember, we are not on public road, we are not a work, we are here as a hobby. For fun, for pleasure. To share common passions about something.
I'm happy to read and learn a lot of thing from other, and if I can help I'm happy to do so too.
But we all do this for free, and if it is too complicated and restrictive, less people will be here.

Within reason yes, just like your free not to have to use the forum at all and then wouldn't need to stick to its rules.

Exactly, and hosting pics on the forum enables this

There is nothing worse than spending hours researching a problem and coming across a nice post which explains the issue and gives nice picture to help explain and oops!

Name: deletedFileerror.jpg
Views: 127
Size: 2.8 KB

Back to the drawing boards I guess...

Its also nice to look back 8 years and see threads full of images.. Whats to say you stop paying that host and move elsewhere then forget to port all of your picture and update all of your locked posts that you are unable to edit again...

Don't worry, I feel sufficiently free to post or not on the forum. And if we can't discuss anything, perhaps a good idea is to buy fiatforum.ru ?

This is another problem, not possible to edit or remove an old post. At the time when google have to remove some links/index, this looks strange, no ?

But one more time, I don't want to remove the forum hosting pics, I just ask why it's not possible to link own pics on own server. It's very different. Proposing something is always a plus, obligating people to use it not.

And what about the size limit ? With the few pictures I have, 20MB should already be reached. And when I post an image I can't remove it anymore ?

But the worst part is to discuss something of the forum. I point something that is a limitation for me, and most of reply are not open-minded at all. "this is like this and please shu* **" if y resume in few words.

Again to stop malicious activity, and prevent massive gaps from appearing on the forum.

But one could always turn it around and say you're not being open minded. It's been explained why it is the way it is, and I can't see why its a limitation for you. It causes me and no-one else any issues.

If you've issues with the size limits make a donation to the forum and you then get unlimited uploading enabled
