If people got into the habit of rating threads, then it's helpful in that you can see quickly which threads are good and which are crap, so if you're picky or short of time, you can just read the highly rated threads. I think I will start rating threads, until I get bored! (Also this means that until others start rating, they'll all be marked with my rating. Oh the power....)
