I wondered if it was worth having a section in the 'general' (or 'miscellaneous') area specifically for dealing with alternative fuels - mainly thinking about the various threads popping up regarding biodiesel and waste veg oils.

I don't know what's happening in each car section but there are a couple of threads floating around other sections not really linked to anything but may be of relevance / use.

There may even be people who want to share their experience of LPG conversions or additions to diesel engines.

bump

I'd be very interested in this, I'm going to have to start making my own bio diesel thanks to the OTT pricing at the pumps. I've seen all the stuff on you tube etc, but would value the oppinion of people thats done it before.

Probably just a load of hogwash but I'm doing the fuelly thingumyjig as part of an experiment regarding magnets on fuel lines - i say they work, others say placebo etc.
anyhoo, due to the stupid price per litre, I decided I'd had enough of straight dino & despite the odd negative temp, figured I would go straight to my summer blend 10 litres Veg plus 22 litres dino to fill the tank.
Miles per gallon seems to have increased somewhat - and all my driving has been around town, just the same as previous weeks...
mpg was between 38 and 39. Added 10 litres wvo and topped up with dino. At next top up my mpg was 41
Does waste veg oil burn better than diesel then?

You got a link to the magnets you use? They're only a few quid arent they? I might give them a go out if interest.

cant they go in general tech? people will still moan though and say they only use their cars section

You can't please all of the people all of the time (or my OH any of the time) but it would be a great place to gather together all the info - especially if the section was not just focussing on veg oil but also on all the other stuff that's out there.
I just thought it would help it stand out if it had its own section rather than a thread within a section (which can, potentially drop off the page).

OK, there's a load of tat out there designed for improving mpg etc & maybe it would be good if this were also to be included?

Certainly keep all the arguing in one area & also everyone would know where to look.

maybe call the section "Alternative fuels (including alternative tech and 'money savers') ?

Mine are about 10 years old but do a search on ebay for fuel magnets or even just magnets & see what comes up.

interestingly, during the search just now I noticed a few listings for in line fuel filters - with a magnet inside! There is no mention as to why a magnet has been placed in the bottom of the filter though.

Not trying to bump the thread or anything :D
BUT, I have noticed a not too inconsiderate increase in economy since chucking in the lard.
fuelly reports my previous MPG to be around 37.9 - 39.0
My last two fills have included 10 litres WVO and my mpg is now 41.0 and 41.2. Not bad for a 7p J-cloth, 10 litres free oil and 3% unleaded?

So 'they' pack the hydrogen into the 'beads'?
It looks like the beads are then warmed to release their gas?
Or are the beads so tiny that they are pumped into the cylinder to be combusted?
I suspect the hydrogen will be 19p/litre & everyone will shift to this new tech.
THEN when everyone is reliant on this new tech (and some will be producing their own hydrogen at home!) the government will slap a heavy tax on the beads - the bit of the tech that can't be replicated at home.

Even better still, if local authorities started making fuel...

Blest plastic to oil machine.
Let's hope the price comes down to 'domestic levels'

Thinking about it, this is almost like the invention we saw in back to the future 2 to power the car.

I have built several "brown gas" generators, but getting more than 1.5ltr/per/min is quite hard and then there is the electrical drain, needs to be less than 5amps. But it does make a difference to mpg [petrol/diesel] USA sites have quite a lot of data, also on youtube too. Storage is NOT a problem because it is made on demand only

looks like it would be possible to do it from the heat from the engine

This is really nothing like the brown gas generators though. I have considered adding one to my car utilising a second washer bottle. Making the gas isn't a problem, it's that you have to tweak the settings on the car's computer to let it know it's not getting air - it's getting a higher concentration of hydrogen and oxygen than ever before so the lambda sensor (for example) will show too much O2 in the mix & add more fuel to compensate.

Im just wondering how hard it'd be to make a DIY unit? Very interesting video.

I'm guessing that's how this guy started?
Maybe a cheapo deep fat fryer (non stick interior, lid seals on and add a tube to vent the gas via a beaker of water to condense the gas.
I wonder if the oil is suitable for blending with diesel or if it has to be refined as per the video?
