to be honst i think this forum should upgrade the file sizes for avatars, sig's and personal pictures seeing as 17kb is maximum for a avatar is kinda pointless seeing as most jpeg images standard size is 23kb even with a compression ratio of 4 it still wouldnt get into the 17kb standards...

also
you have restrictions so users dont go crazy on massive file sizes but you could atleast put a 300kb limit, i mean no one is using dial-up these days.. everyone has broad-band of at least upto 20meg, your forum wont load much slower if you upgrade the sizes the maths behind this is

15 posts per page roughly
so if 15 posts had max file size of avatar (being 50kb)
so avatar 15 x 50kb = 750kb
sig 15 x 300kb = 4500kb(4.3mb)

so total each page would be roughly 5.12mb but that is if everyone has the max file size avatar and max file size sig...

anyway more conclusively to my point those file sizes are to small for someone who is wanting to upload a decent picture with some quality to it...

please consider making the file size slightly larger my examples above where over exaggerated to point out a max page load...

If you host images on the site in the gallery section and then use the HTML code there isn't a file size limit...

And avatars are fine, if you save it as something other than a .jpg they can be tiny files, mines .png and its only like 13kb or something like that. Also some image editors have an option to 'save for the web' and compresses the pictures to small sizes.

I browse the forum a lot from my phone... Is that a 20Mb service? :chin:

I have never seens issues on here for avatars.

Tbh though, there really ought to be a streamlined (read: cut down) mobile version but that's another matter.

I've never had a problem with avatars, normally I just resize it to the right dimensions and it's fine, only issue some people have is wanting animated ones. As far as sigs go, they are the size they are for a reason - because people come here for info not to see some massive big flashy in-your-face sig.

And I'm not sure what you mean about restricted file sizes, it's only restricted for certain types of files but things like JPG's are limited to 9.7mb!?

how exactly do you work that out
so all our members are the world are on up to 20meg?

tbh most people have 20meg broadband its the basic standard in GB no-one uses dial-up here anymore and if they do there is a slight minority...

Hmm, my sigpic is 58k

Also, 20mb isn't the basic standard, some places (where I live for example) we're lucky to get 2mb most of the time. Where I used to live was better but people within a few miles were even luckier to get 512k!

i no 20meg isnt the standard no-one gets 20meg hence why they say up-to 20meg... people who get 20meg are the people who are closer to the exchange point.

but what i was saying is everyone(pretty much) has broadband and not dial-up... so therefore there connection speeds are faster than dial-up and there is a minority which have very low upload and download speeds...

Again though, you're generalising, perhaps broadband is the standard here in the UK (where admittedly the majority of users are) but since FIAT is a global brand we get users from all over the world, who may not be used to the sort of service that we are.

The main issue though isn't bandwidth, it's storage space and server processing capability, which are limited by how much people have donated to the forum and how much ben can afford to pay out of his own pocket (which isn't endless, contrary to popular belief).

Edit: I feel like everyone's trying to shoot you down, it's just that these are minor issues in the grand scheme of things.

well i run a small sever company hosting for local buisnesses, if ben has issues i could sort something out.. i mean we have a dedicated line upload speeds of 4meg on a bad day and download speeds of 6meg on a bad day our average is normaly about 7meg upload and 9-10meg download a second...
i can varify this with images if you want :)

If I am getting that download speed, then I am a cross dressing body builder...

But seriously - as a piece of advice - people who want to view this site on their phones, download Opera Mini. It's a f*cking fantastic browser. Works well on my phones (even if it is a bit dodgy on the LG)...

obv you will be higher than me atm i have 45 websites running here :p 4 of them torrent hosting and 5 of them ftp downloaders... so that 9 using constant usage of bandwidth + the rest using avaerage bandwidth but hey its not bad considering where my buisness is located and for cheep hosting + 24/7sever administration

I agree Opera's server compress the pages before you download them making it faster to browse (y) :slayer:. I'm using it on my HTC Hero running Android 2.1.
