I agree with losing the post count (y)
Ive come on here recently and mistaken it for a chat room! Threads usually start with a topic that most people can get involved with- thats fine, but after the first couple of pages they turn into a competition of 'who can post the most' between two or three people.

I know what you mean... I just can't be bothered to wade through a thread which is 10 pages long with crappy spam, get a room (n)

Re: One idea...

Cheers Dave :)

I think everybody has something to offer just some can take it too far too often.

I think if this is how it is going to be everybody needs to be aware of fair usage of the forum, especially LL - i was always under the impression that within reason LL was (assuming threads weren't too serious) up for anything. If somebody like me is to be made to feel unwelcome (because my car advice is maybe only once a month or so) I would like it to be said rather than the subject danced around.

If however it is just a problem with people who just post to increase their post counts thats not a problem with me - if people notice I don't even post in the "game" threads which could often be seen to be post increases only and nothing more. I did once for a short period of time earlier this year if somebody wants to get pedantic ;)

I'm not really adding much to this other than a very personal and selfish viewpoint, sorry.

Re: One idea...

Having thought about it I think this is basically a good thing. If the plan is to punish for crappy posting and reward good posting with reputation that can only be positive for the forum. I think there is a fine balance between posting sh*t and having a laugh. As long as the forum doesn't lose it's friendly feel....

Also, this is going to give the moderators a lot of extra work. For it to work properly every post will have to be read.

we are still up for fun threads and encourage that but there is too much post count boosting, bring up old threads where there is no need, we are all for old threads being brought up if its apropraite:) but to be used as a post count boosting campain its silly

Yes there are quite a few drawbacks. It may not work, it may do.... we'll see over the next week or 2 how it turns out :)

Steve has got it in one - those who know me on here know i am always up for fun etc but even i am gettting sick of some of the crap thats being posted on here as with many others

Re: One idea...

The great thing with this forum is if a thread is on more than a couple of hours, someone will have said what I was gonna!

I'm all for the post count being binned. The rep thing if we can manage it properly will be a better idea. I was keen on 'member since', but it doesn't take into account a person's contribution to the forum. It had even been suggested in another thread that respect should be granted to long standing members - which is b0110cks IMO. It's about what you post, not how much or for how long.

In the LL I'm not too bothered what gets said as long as the acceptable usage policy is followed, but what I object to is when a thread which starts out with a point becomes spammed with two or three people chatting.

All of which has been said before!

So do I get some rep for this post then? ;)

Re: One idea...

At the end of the day, this is a FIAT forum. You come on here for help, so you need to distinguish who is good at offering that, and the people that do offer good help should be rewarded.

It's not a competition for gawds sake! So you don't offer any good advice, so what? It's not the end of the world :D - but people who do should be recognised for their efforts.

Re: One idea...

On the other hand it might encourage people to give advice more I know if I'm not quite sure or only have half an answer I hang back waiting to see if someone else comes up with the right answer. And quite often with such things, no-one replies in the end whereas I could at least have pointed them in the right direction. I guess a lot of people probably feel like this and end up not posting, but they might be tempted to now if they knew they would be 'rewarded' for it.

Re: One idea...

i cant see how getting rid of post count will stop spamming, people will just do it anyway

is there no way of just limiting the amout of posts per person a day

i spam, i try not too but the temptation is just to strong

Re: One idea...

im gutted the post count has gone i can sort of see why you doing it but also it sucks at same time, i was happy i was getting my post count up by being helpfull as much as i can and i like to see how many posts people have made at least you get some of an idea of whos new who has been here a while and who might actually know what they talking about instead of guessing. i had over 500posts and at least 98% of them would of been from giving helpfull responses to peoples questions :( now i am regarded as just starting out im same as peopel who came on here for first tiem during week :( you need something how exactly does this coloured square thing work ???? :( dam it (n) if there is a voting thing so you can vote to say response was good then great but that wont work as people wont bother.

sorry if im ranting :(

infact this is probably the least helpfull response i have made :(

Re: One idea...

Not a lot I can add really.

I agree that post counts encourage spam posts. Hopefully their removal will help reduce some of the more obvious spam.

The problem with any forum reward scheme is that it can quickly become a popularity contest where the more flamboyant members get the recognition at the expense of the quiet ones who beaver away in the background.

There also needs to be a balance between moderators so that one doesn't get carried away. Possibly a limit on the number that can be awarded each week.

This moderator operated scheme sounds promising, only time will tell. I'll keep you posted on who gets what.
