OK i know this has come up before but recent events suggest to me this should be reconsidered. Of course it wouldn't stop much but if only registered users could read the forum/certain areas it may put some people off just using the forum milliciously. Maybe I am totally over-reacting but it made me reconsider my opinion on this matter.

I haven't asked anybody else about this so have no idea if I am on my own in suggesting this.

Having read previous posts, ive just changed a couple of small things in my profile- left out my full name and deleted exact town. Ive also posted pics of my car and not blanked out the reg plate.

But I think if people really want to look at these forums and cause trouble, most will sign up and do it. Just my opinion.......

I agree it wouldn't do anything except be an extra hassle - Personally I think sites where they do that and Barryboys in particular are a pain to navigate even though I am a member.

And what has Fiatforum got to hide, you can't post unless you're a member so it makes no difference if you can see all forums before you're a member or not. As far as I'm aware you can't cause trouble just by looking at posts!

Bad Idea

So what if it stops malicous users, they are not a big problem in the context of things AFAIK, and I personally wouldn't say recent events were malicous, just a slagging match in the wrong place, which wouldn't have come here but for the 2 FF members involved.

If I had had to register to get in FF I wouldn't have bothered

Agreed, just had our share of what has gone on with other car sites previously and they have learned to live and ignore. Must say I was rather suprised at the response they managed to generate off the site.

I dunno...

what happened, I haven't been on much lately, but how about making only the LL members only? That way anyone after support with their car can still come and browse, and the only thing kept from guest is the banter between members?

Re: I dunno...

Sorry, I have changed my POV, I agree with James, LL being members only would be the best compromise?

Re: I dunno...

I think keep car forums open to the public, and make the LL, for starters, a private members only area - ok, it takes seconds to register BUT that is not the point.

Re: I dunno...

ben has a point, it was some goon from the forum who posted up pics, so restricting access to sections of the forum would be pointless in that situation

still a good idea though :D

Re: I dunno...

Ben, I know what you mean but it seems a lot more personal stuff is written in LL and it would stop the simple casual user from simply reading it all. Of course it takes a minute or less to sign up but it might be enough to stop somebody bothering.

Re: I dunno...

Point taken. Woudl also be good when new users ran a search as they wouldn't get the LL crap stuff within the Fiat stuff, so might find what they want then sign up.

Downside of course if when you quickly want to browse the forum but don't have time to login.

Let the votes get to 30 then we'll trial that decision?

Re: I dunno...

Sure, doubt we will have a problem though, I think most will be in favour.

Logging in takes seconds, I always do it even from Uni because then I know which posts are new etc. :)

I have voted for the idea but to be honest do not think it will make any difference.

The only way to ensure what is being asked for, control over the LL, is to allow only people who have contributed to the site access, as just registering is no problem to anyone. I have done it on many car sites before deciding to actually become a full member or not and all that I have joined have a paid member area.

Steve

I think I already contributed to the site when I joined but I still think that's not on Steve (unless they need the funds!). That would straight away make leisure lounge posts a fraction of what they are with the same people talking to themselves all the time!

As for making the leisure lounge only readable to members again I think that's pointless because they can't do any harm just looking - to cause trouble you have to register one way or the other.
