In order to continually improve the content quality of FF, we the mods have been looking at other forums/sites, to get an idea of what a well run board needs in the way of rules, under consideration are the following, so far it's merely us batting ideas back and forth, but, and this is a bit more serious, there have been occasions where the mod team have been accused of either being to lax, or too strict. so it was decided to look further afield and see how it's done out there. this is by no means final, merely a starting point for the direction and tone we want the forum to take, the mods here work of their own time, for no renumeration, and do so on the basis they are not taking abuse for it.

the following has been lifted from the team bhp site, and provides a fairly good idea of what we are talking about:

The facility of uploading pictures directly to Team-BHP has now been enabled. Henceforth, please do not use imageshack or any other external photo hosting solutions. Attachments have been enabled for all membership levels, only to increase the level of convenience to BHPians, as well as to ensure that pictures never expire from threads.
Photo Upload Rules:

* The file size must be no more than 1 MB / 1000 KB.
* Each post may include a maximum of 20 pictures.

Technical Information:

* There is absolutely no restriction on the image resolution (e.g. 1920×1080). However, within posts, the uploaded image will display in a maximum size of 800 pixels. To view the larger resolution copy, simply click on the image (within the post) and the original size photo will pop open in a separate window.
* Images smaller than 800 pixels will be displayed in their original size only.

As you know, we (The Moderator Team) have supported Team-BHP independently for well over 4 years now. With our community growing in leaps and bounds, it has become increasingly difficult to bear the expenses of Team-BHP ourselves. Costs related to software, server hosting, design etc. have hit the roof. In the near future, you will be seeing advertisements on Team-BHP. Some clarifications:

* Strictly NO Automotive Funding: This has always been our principle and will stay so. Team-BHP will NEVER accept any funds from the automotive industry. Translated, NO automotive manufacturer (or even a tyre brand!) will be allowed to market on Team-BHP.
* NO Clutter: At the most, there will be one banner per page for BHPian+. Guests may view upto 2 banners per page. This equates to only 7% (or less) of each page's size. The focus will always be on content.

The following rules MUST be strictly adhered to, when using the Team-BHP Classifieds Section:

1. Titles should be absolutely precise, and clearly indicate the year, make and model of the product. Example : “2007 Honda Civic”.

2. Product price is compulsory for any listing. Ads placed without an indication of the price will be deleted immediately, with the possibility of an infraction to the said member's account. Type the price in full in the required field - eg. 340,000Rp NOT 3.40Rp.

3. Photographs are compulsory for each ad. The photograph should be of the ACTUAL product, and not a mere sample lifted off the internet. The size limit for uploaded photographs is 500 kb per file.

4. Comments to each ad must be made only from seriously interested parties. Please do NOT discuss the product or price if you have no intentions of buying it. Similarly, leave feedback only for those sellers who you have bought a product from.

5. Dealers and business persons are allowed to sell in the Team-BHP Classifieds, except within the “Gadgets” section.

6. Sellers may enter their email address and phone number as an option. This is not compulsory, though highly recommended as guest viewers will not be able to PM you.

7. Only one product per ad is allowed. Multiple product ads will be deleted immediately. Also, do NOT repeatedly create new ads for the same product else your account may face an infraction / ban.

8. No more than 3 ads per week are permitted. Ads placed at a frequency higher than this will be categorised as "flooding" and may result in your membership being infracted / banned.

9. Our regular board rules apply to the classified section as well. Please review them before proceeding any further : Link to Board Rules.

Team-BHP has implemented a comprehensive warning / notification system that will assist the Support Team in maintaining the quality of this community. Your user account will now accumulate points for each offensive post that is against the Team-BHP Rules and Guidelines. We strongly advise new members to get familiar with our board rules.

In the event that a members profile accumulates 10 points, that member will be temporarily banned from Team-BHP. Each point infraction is valid for a period of 45 days, after which the infraction is deleted and your points come back to 0.

• Excessive smilies : 3 points

• SMS / Slang / Poor Readability : 4 points

• Spamming / Excessive one liners : 4 points

• Personal attacks : 4 points

• Posting externally hosted pictures : 4 points

• Plagiarism : 5 points

• Commercial exploitation : 5 points

• Posting classified ads without price / picture : 5 points

• Abusive Language : 7 points

• Trolling : 7 points

• Racial / sexual abuse : 10 points

Most infractions will entail a notification PM. Infractions can also be viewed in your own user profile.

Posts made in these forum sections will not add to your total post count.

3. Shifting Gears.
4. Marketplace.

In order to recognise those BHPians that have made a significant and consistent contribution to our community, Team-BHP announces a new membership category - The Distinguished-BHPian. Entry to this new membership category is only by invitation from the Team-BHP Support Staff. In our recognition of their contribution to Team-BHP, and to express our gratitude to them....

- Set self to Invisible mode
- An increased PM space of 1000 messages
- An increased Number of BHP Garages (25)
- Access to a private forum where they can have a one-on-one with the Team-BHP Support staff

These guidelines are to be strictly adhered to, when posting in the BHP Garage Section of Team-BHP.

1. The BHP Garage is only for posting pictures of YOUR OWN cars and bikes.

2. Only 7 Photographs per garage are allowed, while a total of 10 garages are available for each member.

3. The Image size is restricted to 500 kb per image.

by all means feel free to provide constructive comment, one of the major differences between us and others, is a lack of a formal subs/fees system, our means of running the site is donations, advertising and goodwill by all. this meand we can pretty much leave it open to anyone to come and go as they please

Sorry the only one i really done agree with is being forced to upload imaged to the FF gallery. I have my Photobucket account and no pictures that i put in my car folder on there will be removed. If i have to start uploading stuff to FF gallery aswell as my photobucket account it just becomes a pain in the arse. I understand why you want people to do it but i disagree with it.

what about in 5+ years time?

its mainly the old threads where you get images that have been moved or removed and it ruins things

That is the reason - staff are sick are tired of referring back to old threads, and we all see is red boxes, with missing image links.

We are quite lax in LL, etc - but for technical threads, FAQs, guides, Members' Motors, it is imperative on-site hosting is used. No one is forcing you to use it, but just don't moan when your thread gets deleted for failing to adhere to the rules :)

If i was doing a guide then i probably would use on site. But for my profile i wouldnt bother hence why i havent made one and probably wont when its just going to get deleted because i use something else to host the pictures.

i upload pictures onto my own webspace and then link to them from different forums, if i kept getting told off for doing that on here then i'd just not bother posting any on here.

uploading one photo at a time using a web browser interface is clunky, and a pita. give us ftp access and i'll happily fxp any files over though :)

not friendly imo, and we're meant to be a welcoming newbie friendly kind of place. stop them from viewing the member list or profiles, and polls. But not being able to post.. thats the whole point of a forum. And if they can't upload to the gallery then they can't post pictures at all.

I also don't think we need a user infraction system, this is a forum - not a school. Totting up merits and demerits. All of the infration levels are open to moderator discrection - just like the way things are currently handled. Its not broken.

Access to a private forum where they can have a one-on-one with the Team-BHP Support staff

No. A lot of other forums i'm on have hidden areas for special members and the like, it causes more problems than its worth. If someone wants a one-on-one with staff then there is PM. We don't need anything other than the forum that i assume is only visible to the moderators / admins.

whats wrong with current system?

All of that was take from the BHP website by the looks of it so it's doesn't all necessarily apply to here. I think what Jai was getting at is are there any rules in there that would help us out, or is adding more rules just going to end being more of a hinderance.

At least that's my understanding

the whole guide section uses attachments for a reason
if you didnt then its either edited or deleted
have a look on the guides section, bit pointless if the guide references pictures that are not there?

They can post, just their posts are put into a queue for the mods to check before they appear on the open forum (y)
