Technical Gear linkage cables

Do the gear linkage cables need to be set up on the 4x4 diesel Sedici, and if so how? Wife driving car other day and couldn’t move gearstick to select any other gears. Got car home and found one of cables had snapped. Put another set of cables on but still can’t select any gears, except I think 3rd. Gearstick hardly moves back or forth or side to side.
Could there be an issue inside the gearbox that caused cable to snap or do the new cables require setting up.
