Sound stopped coming from passenger side big speaker on my 1.6 4WD so here is the story:
the panel trim can be prised apart at the bottom using a knife and a couple of screwdrivers and wedged with a foot long piece of wood to give access so no need to remove whole panel.
A short phillips screwdrivers need to remove 3 screws holding speaker.
Flat blade screwdriver to press the clip on the electrical connection and prise apart. This was tricky as it was severely corroded and the cause of the problem.
Remove the plastic clips using long nose pliers to compress their arrow heads on the inside, one is red, note it's position on the frame. Screw the clips back onto the speaker before you lose them, note the red one is different.
Clean the female connectors on the car side, I used a spade connector and some grinding paste for this but a bit of sandpaper and repeatedly inserting a spade connector will do, also compress them using a small screwdriver to ensure a tight fit.
I then soldered cables onto the speaker solder joints bypassing the connector and soldered spade connectors onto the cables, pushed these into the car connector keeping the same cable orientation then wound self amalgamating tape around the connector.
There is plenty of space for the cables and the speaker just pushes straight into the door frame using the clips and the door panel pushes straight back on remembering to remove the wooden wedge first.
I checked the other side. It was also corroded so did the same thing and all OK now.

Hi tinytim

Thanks for the information, the drivers side speaker has just went on mine. This will come in very handy.
