Just bought a 2008 1.9 diesel sedici 4x4 from a local dealer

Drove 15 miles and the engine management light came on, back to the dealer and their computer says excessive exhaust back pressure. I'm thinking DPF and so is he. He says he has some magic solution involving removing DPF and soaking in cleaner

Any thoughts welcome, is he correct or pulling my leg

Cheers

Not a diesel driver... but soaking it in 'cleaner' sounds odd.
I guess if it fixes it???

Thanks for the reply

After 8 days of ownership I've actually only had the car for 2 days and driven it 5 times, 3 of those back to the dealer

Engine light still on!

Pretty sure I've bought a dud

My first and possibly last FIAT(n)

I LOVE my Fiat.
Felt so safe today on the icy roads.
But yours sounds odd.
I would check your statutory rights, and maybe apply them before it's too late.
It could be one of those cars that just needs to be returned...
( Maybe check the honestjohn website for advice? )

hi and thanks again for the response

dealer is well known locally and has a good reputation to protect (small village and he's been there for well over 25 years)

He's totally baffled but willing to send the car to FIAT to be fixed at his expense, that sound fair to me but I'm without the car until its fixed. (i do have another but it only has 2 seats!)

I'll give him a few more days but then I need to think about my way forward

trouble is the sedici fits the bill so well, small, reasonably economical and 4X4.

cheers

When I had my engine management light saga a few years back on my Sedici the diagnostics were showing the MAF as being the issue. Turns out it was the EGR valve that had failed (around a £40 part) which was then causing the DPF to get clogged (a £700 part).

If you catch it early enough then it won't do any terminal damage to the DPF.

I have a spare EGR in my garage ready and waiting in case it goes again.

FIAT have diagnosed a duff exhaust pressure sensor but don't have a replacement available. Fingers crossed when it arrives.

Sensor now at the dealers so will be fitted soon (Monday).

Now I've had the chance to drive the car one thing is very obvious, it stinks of diesel exhaust. More so when stationary. Driven about 60 miles today and have a headache and tingly eyes. It's that bad. Says he's giogs to look into that too.

I like the car though. It'll be great when it's running right, fingers crossed

we've done about 250 miles since the repair and can confirm that the lights had remained off and the smell as (almost) disappeared.

the light comes on as it should far a self test when the key is turned the goes straight out

I think the smell is a residual from when it was bad and needs a good valet to freshen the car up

economy seems a reasonable 45 mpg (although I'm converting from l/100km as I can't get MPG)

all together please with the outcome and the efforts of the dealer to put it right

fingers crossed it stays that way

well another month and no light so looking promising, thats the good news

bad news is that a front spring has broken , must be a combination of pot holes and speed bumps! replacement ordered for fitting this weekend.

Hope your car is sorted now and the dealer has not just done forced regenerations to try clean the particulate filter. (Hence the strong smell of diesel)
For a dealer not to know about DPF problems... Sorry but I am sceptical.

Noticed you said you're clock is in km... There may be a way to change to mpg.
See previous post https://www.fiatforum.com/sedici/249646-ltrs-per-100km-mpg.html

Front springs seem a common weakness looking at other posts on the forum.

Just a quick update. Engine light still off, spring fitted, smell gone.

About 1000 miles and feeling more optimistic, really quite liking the car now

:)

optimism misplaced, engine light back on. Fiat have diagnosed DPF breakdown.

Shame as we really do like the car

looks expensive!

ok, direct from Fiat

p1205
p2453

three options as I see it

Fiat brand DPF, ouch!
Non OEM DPF, £5-600 fitted (will it last?)
DPF remove and reprogram £3-400 (but is it legal?)

it's very much a 'second car', sometimes unused for days but when used its generally for 15 or so miles at a time with a 100 mile motorway run about every six weeks.

cheers

i do admit i drive my car quite hard,(rally car comes to mind) and according to my feedback from multiscan has only ever done 2 regens in 85,000, and the car is better now than its ever been, i have the car from brand new,07 plate, (and will probably be buried in it) apart from service parts its been very good, maybe yours could do with a good thrashing? personal choice, but its not done mine any harm, i do keep up with servicing, (my own since a Citroen forgot to replace my engine oil on a piccasso, after the'd drained it) but i rank the sedici probably one of the best cars I've had in the last 30 years, just my opinion for what its worth.....

we like ours too but three problems in six months is enough, especially when one looks very expensive to fix. the others were £50 fixes and that's OK on an older car in my book but the DPF looks like running to several hundred and on whats supposed to be a cheap run-about may be the last straw. Hope not!:bang:
