weve had our sedici diesel now for three months.until this week its run silky smooth with a really quiet engine.its now developed a really loud ticking noise which increases with engine noise.it still seems to drive ok but is getting really noisy.it has the sound the tappets need doing but i think there hydraulic.it was serviced when we got it.got it booked in on tuesday but any advice would be appreciated.its on 56000 miles.

thanks pip

yeah, checked it several times.it is hard to get an accurate reading on the stick.it seems to smear on the stick when you pull it out.there does appear to be enough in.cant see ant leaks.weve done about 3000 miles in it,what would be the normal oil useage for the mileage?

turned out to be a dmf failure.cost just over a grand to put right, not happy at all.

Did you buy from a dealer? If so:
Any fault developing within 6 months is deemed to be present at the time of sale and covered by the Sales of Goods Act.
Ignore any useless third party 3 month warranty and deal directly with the seller.
You must give the seller a chance to fix it.
If no joy then having got it repaired sue the seller in the small claims court.
Despite the better performance and mpg of the diesel Sedici I bought the petrol 1.6 to avoid DMF's, DPF's and cambelts.
If your diesel has done more than 40,000miles and no invoice record of cambelt change then get it done (plus change water pump and tensioners) now......

Thanks for taking the time to post the fix Pip.... may come in handy for future owners/members.

Dual Mass flywheel's are being fitted to most diesels nowadays to stop the vibrations being transferred. I remember the older diesels having shaking pedals and gearsticks.

Symptoms can be a failed starter motor and excessive vibrations/noise/juddering.

Premature wear could be a sign of excessive urban driving... the diesel being better suited to long distance driving with the six speed gearbox, turbo and DPF system.

Good news is they should, hopefully, have fitted a new clutch fitted at the same time.

Cambelt and waterpump change is very good advice from TinyTim if not already done. From experience, it must be done by a competent mechanic/garage as the engine mount needs to be removed to gain access and the belt then tensioned correctly... too tight can cause waterpump failure and can snap the belt thus destroying the engine.
I recommend Darren at AlfaTech, Ledbury, Herefordshire to all after saving our engine from this. http://www.alfa-tech.co.uk/ (y)

I think my Sedici is developing a DMF issue. Get a short squeal on startup and a very slightly increased amount of vibration from the engine.

What happens when they fail? Is it a breakdown on the side of the road job?

Hiya "Saint" Sedici... Sorry for slow reply.

You sure the squeel on startup isn't coming from the cambelt/waterpump area?

Worst case scenario of dmf failure is it can kill your cutch/gearbox/starter motor.

Good Youtube clip to watch, read and listen to.....

If you click on the orange title box above the image, it should load the YouTube webpage in another window so you can view the comments from other owners etc.
It's worth a read buddy.

Ah ok, mine isn't doing anything like that in the video. The squeal may well be from the timing belt area. The belt is only a few months old so I can't imagine it's going to fail already. Might just be the sudden change in temperature we've had recently... Will keep an eye on it.

bit of an update.cars been running pretty with but weve a few issues so its going back in.the 4x4 is not selecting since the flywheels been done.were having the timing belt and waterpump done as well.one other problem is a rubber burning smell from somewhere near the front of the engine, the front grill was very hot to touch.there gonna have a look at this too, after this lot hopefully we might have some trouble free miles.
