Key Fob Battery?

I sometimes find myself having to press the key fob quite a few times to lock the car. I am thinking that this might be the battery in the fob? Does anyone know how to change the battery? I unscrewed the plastic of the key, which then showed another enclosed plastic part with the buttons on it. I don't want to force this open and break it.

Re: Key Fob Battery?

it probably is a flagging battery; thinking of chaning mine prophylactically but have the same problem.
Note that you only have a few seconds to put the new battery in or the key will need to be re-programmed (at great expense)...
Timpsons may be able to help

Re: Key Fob Battery?

Funnily enough i did this the other day because i was getting tired of standing a few mm away from the car without it unlocking!

I was scared that it would reprogramme itself as well but i took the risk.

You can open up the black unit with the buttons using a flathead screwdriver. I did this the first time around to check the type of battery i needed and then quickly put it back together again.

It's a CR 1620.

The next time around I had the new battery ready, opened up the unit, used the same flathead screwdriver to dig under the battery and ping it out (it flew across the room but i didn't care, time was not on my side), got the other battery, whacked it in (with the writing on the batttery away from you) and quickly snapped the unit back together.

Job done!

Key is now a lot more responsive and works from miles away (i imagine).

Re: Key Fob Battery?

Thanks for the information. I have ordered the battery and just need to pluck up the courage to change it! Worst case if I don't put the new battery in quick enough, will the key still manually unlock the doors if it does lose its programming? Is there a link with some information somewhere backing up the few second rule?

Re: Key Fob Battery?

If it all goes wrong then you'll still be able to open and start the car without the electronic bit.... i've just tried it by taking the button unit out and the car opens and starts with just the key.

I think you'll be alright. The circuit must have been designed in a sensible way to allow a battery change. I would guess it will hold a certain amount of charge to retain its settings, so just don't press the buttons because that will decharge the unit.

Go for it! Good luck and let us know if it goes to plan!

Re: Key Fob Battery?

Just as a aside to this our Fob stopped working a while ago so I presumed battery. I then noticed the Rubber Unlock button did not give that slight click whilst pressing. Opened up the case and the rubber piece had moved slightly from over the switch on the circuit. Probably because of the amount of depressions. Realigned and all ok!

Re: Key Fob Battery?

I have just swapped the battery over, thanks for the instructions cmm.sedici posted.

The cover was probably open for around 10 seconds all in all, with the battery pinged out for around 5 seconds before I got the new one in.

Just tried the fob out and it all seems to work, and is responsive again with its locking/unlocking.

Thanks again for the help. A great forum!

Re: Key Fob Battery?

Just changed mine but had a think while the battery pack was open. Does this only work the remote locks and not the rolling code immobiliser. The spare manual key doesn't have a battery but is registered to the immobiliser without any power supply. If this is the case there is no need to rush the job.
Thank's for the instructions how to go about it.

Re: Key Fob Battery?

Hi Folks

Just joined the Forum as have become proud owner of 2006 diesel Sedici.

Very helpful posts, as the key fob wasn't working. Have now replaced battery and now the doors open with click, but can't get them to lock except by using the key manually!

Any ideas?

PK

Re: Key Fob Battery?

Help please folks!

Still have situation where remote key will open car, but only way I can lock it is manually inserting key into lock and turning. Remote key not locking.

Then tried with non-remote key ...
Driver's door opened fine, but no way could I open any other door, including boot ... can't be right, can it??

Re: Key Fob Battery?

First off, was it a cheapo battery off ebay etc, or a proper Duracell type? This caused a problem on my wife's Skoda. Secodly, on my Sedici, one turn unlocks the drivers door, a double turn unlocks all doors. If that doesn't work, there's always the unlock button on the drivers door.

Re: Key Fob Battery?

Diesel glider

Thanks for that!
I'd not managed to work either of those out!

So ... Usable!

Still needing to work out best way to get get remote working - battery was decent, but no click on lock, only unlock, so think the remote switch is gone.

Is this a Fiat only job - or is there an alternative?

Re: Key Fob Battery?

If you look on ebay for a Suzuki key fob, you should find a complete key. I have instructions on pdf on programming Suzuki SX4 new keys, although I think they only relate to the central locking, not the immobiliser. You could then remove the blade and just use the fob for the central locking.

I can't guarantee that either the key or programming will work, but if you want to give it a shot...here's an ebay search link;

Re: Key Fob Battery?

PeaKay have you tried to open up your Key? Unscrew the single screw on the fob and remove the plate. You can then push out an enclosed casing containing the rubber buttons.
Place a screwdriver in the side slot and prise this apart. The microswitch contacts under the rubber buttons can sometimes move off from the rubber backs. I found there was a couple of metallic small disks over the contact points. The rubbers do wear down - there are SX4 replacement fobs on ebay and theres replacement rubber sections. Not sure how you will replace the actual switch circuit board though if thats gone - pretty sure it'll just be that though.
