I have just one original blue and silver key for the car. If I got another key and had it cut, I wouldn't be able to start the car because of the immobilizer. I called a few locksmiths and they said because Fiat wasn't sold here in the USA after the '80's until just now with the 500, their equipment probably doesn't have the software to clone the key and the best thing to do would be to send my key to Europe and have it cloned by a locksmith there. I don't wan't to take that risk just yet of not being able to move the car for weeks or if my key was lost. Does anyone know if the immobilzer system can be disabled or bypassed on this car?

yes it can be done but the choice would be posting your Engine ECU to europe or Posting just the key. in all honesty if it was easy to disarm it wouldn't be much use.

in all likelihood your fiat dealer might be able to help, no harm in contacting them for a chat, and remember that fiat is a big company that includes Alfa Romeo Ferrari, Maserrati etc so specialists in these cars might be able to offer a solution as well as these electronics systems are all fairly similar.

Fiat only returned to the USA this year. No support for older cars. Alfa not back yet. I doubt a Ferrari or Maserati dealer would touch it.

Well it's that or drive to Mexico.

No one on hear is going to tell you how to disable the immobiliser, so you really have no alternative but to try what's been suggested, we are all fully aware that fiat only returned this year to the US however this doesn't mean they don't have the means to talk to Fiat in Europe and suggest a solution

I know its an old thread, but had to have my say.
Keys in 1997 cars used the first type of transponder by made by Megamos, since then a read/writeable aftermarket transponder has been available worldwide to copy these.
As USA was the originating place for these, then its highly unlikely USA locksmiths cannot do this. Its also highly unlikely that they cannot read them.

If in the possible event that you can only get it read, email me the key data read out from the keycutters machine and I will send you a clone over.
