Hi everyone. I'm new here, so please excuse me if I get anything wrong. This is my first post. I have a Fiat Scudo 57 plate. It's always been reliable up to about a year ago when stuff started going wrong. An engine light came on and the vehicle went into "limp" mode. An ODB check showed an EGR code. I took it to a mechanic who my dad recommended. The mechanic said the EGR valve needed cleaning. He cleaned it, charged me a stupid amount of money, but it didn't fix the problem and the engine light / code came on again. He said the computer just needed to re-learn and cleared the code for for me but that didn't fix it. Soon afterwards, the vehicle completely conked out (lots of white smoke from the exhaust, rough idle etc). This time the mechanic said the solonoid on the EGR was broken. He fitted a new EGR valve and that seemed to do the trick. Fast forward 6 months and I took the vehicle to a new garage for the glow plugs to be changed. During the work they noticed the EGR valve had been fitted without a gasket. So they fitted a gasket for me. Now the engine light has come back on and is showing an EGR code of P0489 EGR Control Circuit A Low with it knocking the vehicle into "limp" mode again.

From what I've read on here and other places, this code is most likely electrical (maybe a short). But other suggestions have been made, including something to do with the Mass Air Filter sensor. In trying to diagnose the issue I decided to disconnect the MAF sensor connector. Doing so has prevented the vehicle going into "limp" mode. If anything, with the sensor disconnected, it runs better. I also noted that the air filter was really sooty, so I changed it. Today I took the van into the garage for the MAF sensor to be checked. They found nothing wrong with it but changed it for a new one just to be sure. That didn't work, so they refitted my original one. As far as they can tell, everything is as it should be with the actual EGR valve. They also checked all the vacuum hoses and said they couldn't find any leaks. The only thing they think it could be is an electrical fault, which would fit with the P0489 code.

As it stands, the van is running fine, except for the engine light showing P0489 (EGR Control Circuit A Low) as well as the MAF circuit low (due to me disconnecting the sensor).

I wonder if anyone on here has had similar issues and what it turned out to be? Also, does anyone happen to know if there is a sensor that is connected to the EGR that could be causing a "low" voltage warning P0489. Alternatively, might there be a fuse that's blow that's causing a low voltage?

Any ideas on what my options are? Is it possible to "map" the EGR code out of the system so the light doesn't show? Would that be a good/bad idea?

Any input would be really useful. Thanks in advance.
