Hi All,

Sorry to have to ask you for this but I ran out of fuel yesterday, not entirely my fault as my gauge has gone on the blink.

I managed to roll to the pump and filled to the brim but couldn't get it started. I think I ran in down too much.

I got recovered, the green flag guy couldn't be bothered to try and start me as he didn't know where the diesel primer pump is.

I just need to know where this is so I can at least attempt to try and start it!

Thanks in advance and sorry for being a wally!

Hi,

Thanks for that, it's the 1.5 90 multijet if that helps?

Thanks

Paul

First, are you sure it ran out of fuel? If the injection system stopped working, you'd get the same effect. How does the amount you put in compare with the stated tank capacity.

I have no specific knowledge of this vehicle, but it should still be logical.

Mechanical injection:
A big lump of a mechanical injection pump on the engine, with a pipe to each injector.
A lift pump, either mechanical mounted at a camshaft, or an electric one in or near the tank.
A fuel filter that may have a little rubber pump on it for bleeding.
Follow the pipework and see what you've got.
A mechanical pump at the camshaft will usually have a manual lever on it to prime the system. Takes a lot of pumping, and they are prone to breaking. If the camshaft is on the pump's max travel, it won't work, have to turn the engine to drop it off the cam.
If you can, slacken a pipe union at an injector and pump until fuel dribbles without bubbles. Might need to slacken all of them. Take care not to twist the pipes.
If still no start, on mechanical pumps there is usually a solenoid that stops the fuel when the engine is turned off. When these fail, they stay closed, cutting off the fuel. It'll be on the injection pump, usually on the top with a single wire to it. Should click as the ignition is switched on/off.

Electronic injection:
One pump, in the tank is both a lift pump and injection pump. It should run as the ignition is turned on, and these are usually self-priming, so should start. There will be no injection pump at the engine, and each injector will have an electrical connector to it. Fuel is usually via a single supply 'rail' rather than individual pipes.

I've kept away from diesels for a long time, so if this needs updating, hopefully someone will do so.

Disappointing that Green Flag just abandoned you. If no luck, call them again and ask them to do the job properly.

Edit: Had to leave to computer for too long, just posted this and see you've fixed it. Well done.

I guess this is common rail, so be VERY careful messing about with fuel lines. The pressure in the high pressure end of the system can force diesel deep into soft tissue...
