Hi,
Has anyone got any tips / instructions for changing the starter motor on a 2004 2.0JTD Scudo (old shape). Having taken a look, I'm not even sure where the starter motor is?...I have changed starter motors on other cars before so not completely useless but always had haynes manuals to refer to which I don't believe you can get for these vans. I have read through other posts but can't find what I'm looking for so any help much appreciated.

Hi mate
Yeah done mine last year I also have a 04 2.0jtd. its on front of engine as u look at the engine it's to the right, beside the fuel filter housing.there are a couple of pipes in the way like the black pipe for the rad. Think it was two or three bolts holding it in. disconnect the battery first and then disconnect any wires going to the starter ie earth/power. Then just Unscrew the bolts that hold it to the engine then give it a wiggle it's should then just come out.. Took me about 30mins
Hope this helps

Thanks for the reply. Is this a job you do from underneath or can you reach it from top? I've taken the battery + tray and the air filter housing out so far so I'll have another look tomorrow and see if I can find the starter motor.

Thanks a lot for uploading the photo Bambo, really appreciate it. Just had a quick look so hopefully I will be able to start getting this sorted tomorrow. (y)

I done it from the top. Bit fiddly but not to bad.if you use something to hold the pipes back makes it easier. Didn't have to take battery out tho as it's further to the left of that.

I did mine from underneath... put van up on a pair of ramps, disconnected the battery, and moved the upper and lower front airbox assembly to make a little more room.
Then it was just a case of uncoupling a few bits of wiring and slipping the starter out once the three bolts had been removed. Quite straightforward really, it probably took me an hour from start to finish.

Hope this helps you and good luck with it.

Update: - I have now changed the starter motor, did job from above which saved messing about with axle stands plus didn't have option of putting on ramps as non-starter. Thanks to Bambo & superscudo for taking the time to reply (y)

Now the bad news:- probably didn't need a new starter motor as original problem has now returned. The problem is that when you turn the ignition on it sometimes doesn't turn over at all - just a click sound. You might try and start a day later and it will turn over and start with no problems. As the starter had started to sound like it was struggling at times and because the battery was tested at a local garage as being good I assumed it might be a sticking or worn starter motor. Unless I've bought a new duff one which I doubt, the problem obviously lies elsewhere. I've seen a post on here that describes virtually the same intermittent starting problem with one contributor saying it may be switch or relay problem with a temporary fix being running a wire and switch from the battery to the starter. If anyone has fixed a similar problem or got any advice then please post.
Cheers

Hi

I have perhaps the same problem did you sort it out?

Changed the battery, earlier had problems with glow plug relay.
