Problem starting in morning once it starts no problems at all for rest of day.

when i 1st turn key it sounds slightly different if i keep turning over it seems to turn quicker & quicker then after a minute or 2 it starts - i get a bit of smoke but then fine all day - starts on the button

I had van serviced yesterday but not glow plugs as not enough time to do them - i still have the same problem

As i have no other problems with starting for the rest of the day would this be glow plugs ? -

i had a recon starter motor fitted in March / April - could it be a starter motor problem as like i said it sounds different & seems to speed up until it starts

thanks for the reply - you seem pretty certain about that - i was quoted £80 to change them which is not a fortune but it's not something i want to spend if it turns out that it's that them

Thanks for your help

Ok, I was a bit short on details :D but I can honestly say, "been there, done that" and the difference new glow plugs make is amazing.

You can do them youself but, again from personal experience, £80 is an amount I'd consider a 'tip' if someone else was doing them for me :p - it's a right PITA and for £80, snap his arm off :D

Ok i had the glow plus done yesterday - i went home & after a few hours went to start engine i had a bit of a problem starting but it did eventually start - which i thought was strange as before plugs were done no problem through day once 1st started in morning

Now this morning van will not start at all it sounds different also - i'm not getting that speeding up until it starts - it's just turning & turning

Any ideas as i've spent over £200 & it's worse

Thanks

i would get battery checked make sure it is powerful enough to wind starter if starters not winding over fast enough it takes longer to start in mornings had same problem changed glow plugs filters starter only to find out battery was loosing some charge overnight fitted new battery and starts first turn

Thanks for the reply -

battery was changed in the summer - i got a battery that was higher rated that the book said i needed - supplier said my van needed say this battery but newer models needed a more powerful battery - for extra few quid i went for more power - so i don't think it's the battery :bang:

with the starter not winding fast enough is it worth getting that checked as it is a recon fitted in march or april or would it be something else causing this

Sorry for all questions

check all your fuel pipes make sure its not getting air in has yours got a primer on it try pumping this while turning engine over

Thanks again - you will have to excuse my ignorance - primer is that a black button close to dip stick - if so i just tried that no change - this time of night i cannot see fuel pipes - i will have to check that in the morning.

primer bulb isconnected to fuel lines this will pump fuel threw its like a rounded rubber bulb when turning engine over keep squeezing this u will need someone to turn engine for u

Only two possible causes of non-starting given the symptoms you describe:

1. Stop solenoid is dud
2. Fuel pump is dud

Stop solenoids are easily checked - look for 12V on the top connection with the ignition on. Then disconnect the top wire and measure the solenoid coil resistance - if open-circuit, change solenoid.

2. Check fuel flow by disconnecting pipe coming out of fuel filter (catch fuel in bottle). You may have to hold your finger over the pipe to build up back pressure as (I think) the pump is operated by pressure sensor in fuel filter.

Both items are common causes of problems in these vans.

I know because mine has 'just' suffered same problem and I'm spending tomorrow fixing the f****g thing :bang:

Thanks for that :chin:

is it possible to get a haynes manual for the scudo

So would you say it's just a coincidence that this has happened the day after the glow plugs were changed

It may well be that your glow plugs weren't the original problem! No harm in having them changed if they were old and always wise to fix the 'easy' stuff first.

Unfortunately there is no Haynes manual for the Scudo - there is a 'book' done by some guy that offers some help (I've got a copy but for the life of me can't remember who wrote it - I'll have to dig it out of my workshop tomorrow). Info is pretty scarce - scarce enough for me to consider putting MY experiences down on paper and making it freely available to others - I have some decent experience of electrical issues with this van now :p

For me at least, it's been a case of suck-it-and-see.

Right i've had a look & the guys who did glow plus called over this morning still no further along - they are going to have to pick it up & take it back with them - he started talking about no compression which worried me to be honest

I've looked & the fuel pipes & there is fuel in them

Can anyone tell me - does the fuel come from tank through filter & then from filter to pump

if that is the case - the fuel from the tank enters the filter at the top & leaves the filter at the bottom - really sorry if i sound a bit dull

so to check if fuel is pumping through will i need to check in few different places say before it enters the filter & then maybe after the pump - trying to start when the fuel pipes are disconnected won't cause any further problems will it

really grateful for your help so far guys :worship:
