My fiat scudo keeps cutting out

My scudo keeps cutting out, i have just had a full servise and mot done on my van its a 1.9d non turbo. It started to cut out now and again but now its every few miles, the garage wants to change the fuel filter housing at a cost of £300 after spending £50 on sat for a full service and mot. Can anyone help with this

Re: My fiat scudo keeps cutting out

Rather steep price for a fuel filter housing.....

Have you noticed any fuel leaks in/around the fuel filter housing area?

Fuel starvation seems a likely cause (and a leaking filter housing can be the answer) but there are other areas to be checked such as the fuel pump, injectors etc.

If you trust the garage (get some committment from them on what they will do if the filter housing DOESN'T cure the fault) then go ahead. Having the injection system and injectors tested should probably cost less.

But this in no guarantee.

Re: My fiat scudo keeps cutting out

It would be very simple to install an in-line filter in place of the existing fuel filter as a temporary measure. It certainly won't cost £300

It would eliminate the fuel filter as a symptom immediately. If you are prepared to take a (small) risk, bypass the fuel filter with a piece of fuel hose and run the vehicle for a short while.

If the vehicle runs all day (sometimes) then the fuel filter is most likely NOT the cause.

It could be the stop solenoid (quite likely - a simple loose connection).
It could be electrical (loose wiring)
It could be the fuel pump (unlikely)

Any garage that wants to do 'process of elimination' tests that cost £300 a shot should be avoided.

Try to get hold of someone familiar with diesels that can come out with you - you might get a chap to do it for a back-hander (£50 say) - who can trace the fault when it occurs. If you take the van to the garage and the van is running they can't be blamed for not finding a fault that isn't there!

Re: My fiat scudo keeps cutting out

My experience of this symptom has allways resulted with the high-presure pump (yep thats the expensive bit) But I have never had anything to do with the 1.9 non turbo version, usualy 2.0 JTD. Strongly advise following kellys-eye advice on bypassing the filter first, that is a cheap and easy place to start which may save you a £300 garage bill for nothing.

Re: My fiat scudo keeps cutting out

This is possable but in order to test, drain the filter before you take off the fuel line. (if the filter is full the pump wont activate) . If it still dont work you need to get hold of the wires for that pump and give it 12v to elimanate any wiring faults.

Re: My fiat scudo keeps cutting out

Sorry to throw a spanner in the works, although I am a Scudo owner, I had a Vauxhall Combo which had the same symptoms as you, albeit my symptoms lasted 2 days before giving up the ghost completely.

It turned out to be the fuel ECU.

Just a thought
