On my 2000 Scu the rear offside brake reads low on brake force, I have replaced the wheel cylinder no difference and then the brake shoes obviously a little lower as not bedded in but still a good bit less than the nearside. VOSA examiner failed it for an IVA but said that it would have passed an MOT ok. Any ideas as to how I can increase the efficiency at this wheel?

Thanks Tony

when you refitted the drum it wasn't to loose was it ?
should be quite tight but not to tight that it wont turn ..
cleaning the inner drum of any lip that might be there wil help
adjusting was a slow job bit by bit with a thin flat screwdriver on the "self adjuster" .. never known one to self adjust yet :)

Even with the drum catching slightly against the shoes no real improvement was made. New cylinders new shoes new flexi and new master cylinder lots of head scratching garage at a loss as to how we can make any more effort at that wheel. On the road the car skids under heavy braking, stops in a good distance and in a straight line and even has a shorter breaking distance than my wifes fiesta. As I said it's plenty good enough for mot but not enough for vosas iva. I can get the percentages up with a partial load as the load sensing valve helps but..........................the vehicle must be presented for iva unloaded.

Just out of interest why are you worrying about VOSAS IVA When and I quote . “The new IVA service replaces VOSA’s Single Vehicle Approval inspections and mainly affects imports, kit cars and rebuilt vehicles.”

The way I understand it your Fiat Scudo doesn’t fit into that category as it’s already euro spec. unless I misunderstand things. Or are you just trying to pass the IVA for your own peace of mind

You need to have the IVA to register an imported vehicle under 10 years old. As there was no COC issued when this vehicle was new (a year or two later the same model had one) dvla need to have proof that it complies with the regulations for use on uk roads. Stupidest part is a motor over 10 years just needs to scrape through the mot and dvla are happy.

This is just a thought but maybe worth checking, Are both rear tyres the same make/model/tread depth. Tyres with variations would surely affect the grip on the rollers to a small degree therefor create different readings.

Thanks tyres are same age, wear and general condition. It's got me and the garage beat. Pity the rears weren't extra slippy as the tester has said if all the wheels lock then the efficiency doesn't need to be calculated, so slippy wheels would lock and the rollers would slip on them right:idea:.
