Scudo van wont start in the rain

Hi, I had trouble with my Scudo van earlier in the year when we had some heavy rain, and have now had the same thing happen today.

Basically, if its raining very hard the van just wont start - it turns over and occasionally fires up, but as soon as you give it any revs it cuts out. Eventually, after leaving it for a while, I can get it to go, but need to gently rev it for a minute of so before it will pull away without cutting out.

Also, a similar thing happens if I go through a large puddle - it splutters about for a while before the engine just cuts out, leading to the same problem as before.

Is there anything in particular that could be causing this and, if so, is there any way to stop it?

Cheers

Re: Scudo van wont start in the rain

Presumably a petrol engine?

If so, condensation on the plugs/leads is the likely cause. The leads may even need replacement.

Check that everything is completely dry, all the way from the distributor to the plugs AND around the plugs themselves. Check the inside of the distributor cap for condensation.

WD40 squirted liberally over the leads/plugs etc can often help.

No its a diesel engine which is what it makes it more difficult to work out what it is!

Diesel?

Still, it's gonna be an electrical issue. Check the injector pump electronics (on the back of the pump I think) and the ECU for condensation.

I take it you're getting a proper 'pre-heat' before going anywhere?

Re: Scudo van wont start in the rain

I had exactly the same prob; first garage didn't fix it winter 2008. Just gone in again for same fault winter 2009-10 (Stops in rain/ driving through puddles etc) 2nd garage reckon its the Crank case sensor (replaced) and/or the oil cooler air intake shovel is too low (3inches off the ground!) They have sawn this off: we shall see!! Crank case sensor blamed for non starting/low rev failure etc.Good luck, its driving me mad too.

It's a long shot but....

the ECU has an ambient pressure sensor on it (the hole in the middle). Is it blocked?
