Hi Y'all,
I have had this vehicle for about 4 years now (51 reg) and have been very pleased with it - that is until I went from Northampton to Oban in it a week ago. I got as far as Glasgow when choking diesel fumes started to enter the vehicle. I stopped and opened up the bonnet but couldn't see any fumes, smoke, or hear anything suspicious, but it really made one's eyes water!
I struggled on to Oban with the windows partly down and was conscious that the power was well down on what it usualy was - even the slightest hill (very many of them in Scotland) needed me to change down and try to keep the revs up.
It wasn't until Monday that I managed to find someone to have a look at it. Luckily he spotted straight away that all of the injectors in the cylinder head were loose! The one being just finger tight!! He tightened them all up (which cured the fumes problem) but he mentioned that the engine did not seem to pick up very quickly when revved. This was very apparent on the way back to Northampton, when it seemed to take ages for the turbo to kick in when the accellerator was depresed in order to overtake. Any ideas?
Also, does anyone know of a source of reasonably priced diagnostic computers/software that I can use myself?

If the injectors were loose then I suspect a fair amount of crud has built up. Might be worth dropping in some injector cleaner and some of the more expensive diesel (shell optimax etc) as it has loads more detergents in it than normal. Also worth checking your oil - if it's thick and sludgy then time for a change!

Let that run through and see what happens. Failing that I've no idea.

Good luck!

The oil looks okay - its not due to be replaced for another 4k miles anyway.
I replaced the air filter (which looked okay) and treated the diesel with a dose of 'fuel line cleaner' similar to Redex. This seemed to make an improvement, but the delay in power pick up is still very noticeable. I suppose I shall have to bite the bullet and get it looked at by a diesel engine specialist - I shall keep you all posted!

Well, the nearest Fiat garage is in Milton Keynes, but because I had a bad experience with it a couple of years ago I decided to conctrate my quest for help in the Northampton area. A specialist diesel engineering company could not even do a diagnostic check unless I left the vehicle with them all day.
I managed to get a local Peugeot garage (I have been reliably infomed that the 2.0 JTD engine is made by Peugeot) to have a look at the vehicle but they said they could not even connect the diagnostics up! (This is despite the fact that the vehicle is fitted with a standard 16 pin connector.) They wanted me to leave the vehicle with them so they could check the wiring and start dismantling various things!!! Did they think I just dropped off the tree?
At times I just despair with this country.............

The next chapter in the saga:
After leaving the vehicle in a long stay car park for two weeks whilst holidaying in Lanzarote, I picked it up around midnight and started off towards Northampton on the M6 south.
I managed about 5 miles before I thought to myself 'This is going bloody slow!'. No sooner had I thought this than the yellow engine management light came on and I was down to 50 mph with my foot to the floor. I stopped at the next services, but couldn't see or hear anything untoward under the bonnet. I had a look at the driver handbook, but this stated that the light was only applicable to petrol engines!!!
I struggled back home and eventually managed to get the vehicle booked in for a diagnostic check at a garage in Bletchley (a week later!). In the meantime the light went out, and the power returned.
I was informed by the garage that there were two intermittant faults: the air volume meter and the EGR valve, but the faults had been cleared from the engine diagnostics system and the software had been updated - which should 'fix things'. This cost me over £80. The light is now out, but it still seems to be suffering from 'turbo-lag'! Have I been 'shafted'?
