I MOT'd the Scudo yesterday - it passed - but the emissions/smoke test was a close call.

It's a 1.9d non-turbo, and the injectors were re-conditioned last year.

The van has about 75k miles on it and runs ok, returns a consistent 33mpg (is that good?)

I'm a bit concerned that the emissions/smoke test was so close to a fail and wonder what I can do to make sure that doesn't happen again.

I always run the van on Shell diesel.

My only confession is that I blanked off the EGR, as I was led to believe that it may improve performance.

Could the EGR be at the root of this, or is there something else??

I've read and been told that running a veg oil mix will help to reduce the emissions - you'd have to check the implications of this and fill in the relevant customs and excise forms though.

Don't actually know for sure if it would help. I'd be tempted to un block the EGR, put some injector cleaner in and see if you can get a garage to re-test before next MOT.

Good luck!

Thanks for your reply Jenks.

I have looked into running on veg oil for the potential cost savings.

Unfortunately the pump in my Scudo is one which is not recommended to be used with veg oil - although I suppose a blend may well work ok...

I will invest in a quality fuel treatment and see how I get on with that.

Cheers.
