Hello, i am from netherlands and recently purchased a fiat strada 1.9 jtd. After 2 weeks i got a problem, the engine just shut off when driving. So the local garage changed the rail sensor, but after that they said it still had problems so they researched the engine and told me the high presure fuel pump was broken.
The costs of this reparration are going to exceed 2k euros (wich is also to expensive, seems like almost double price compared to other places) They already did like 500 euros of work wich i have to pay. Please keep in mind prices vary depending on location.
But i do not feel comfortable dragging a half broken car to another place and listening to mechanics blaming each other.
The costs of the repair are high, but i am wiling to pay them if it keeps the car driving (i bought it for another 2,5 k euro)
I do not have any service history from the car, its kot 250k mileages. I am willing to throw money at it, but a little research before i decide to fix it never hurts.

So is there any way to see if this car is worth the repair at all? Repair or take my loss now, a nasty decision.

Should i take the car (which doesn't drive good or at all this moment) to another garage, with the risk the new place says its the other places fault?

Could it be that the fuel pump is a cause for much more engine failure in the future?

Please let me know, its my first fiat and no idea what to expect. Going to have to call the garage tomorrow morning to say yes or no for the repair.

thx

Hi.
The parts they are changing do not make sense..

The HP pump relies on engine revs to build pressure..

If it starts.. it should not be a problem once running..

Its a different problem ;)

Did they give you a list of error codes.. and diagnostic readings?

Post a quick list of this in the Grande Punto section..

Several in there are europeans.. so will know your vehicle better than me

Today i called the garage and asked why they charged EURO 2000,- for swapping hp fuel pum/distribution belt.. Guy told me yeah its a refurbished fuel pump and included is the water pump.. Seems almost double the ' regular' price. Also it is done in another place, and there seem a lot of hidden bull**** costs which are not going to improve the car. And i still do not know why this guy thinks replacing the fhp fuel pump would solve the problem. If it is torned like they said it makes no sense that it starts and drives, i think their diagnose is based on the error codes or something. Will ask them if they took the engine apart to check the pump.. And i found out this ' specialist' of the garage took the car to another place. Mysterious. It will get back thursday or something to the garage i left him.

Anyway i told the garage i am not ok with the quote of EURO 2000,- , i did ask him to change cranck sensor though since so many people here seem to have the same kind of symptons and that seems an easy solution.
(my car just stalls, last time i started was cold engine in the morning, it runs for a minute, maybe 2/3 and stalls. After that i don' t need to cool it, i can restart and it runs again, however stalls faster/runs less time. After doing that many times maybe it needs to cool for 10-20 seconds or just doesn't restart immediately.

Will get the error codes asap

Went to the garage today, the guy explained everything a bit, sounded reasonable to me. Car still stalls after minutes of running.
For now another garage is going to take a look at it and probably going to change the hp pump. They did replace the electrical pump in the back, the rail sensor and the crankshaft sensor.

From the rapport:

P1671 drukregelklep (pressure regulator valve (?) -component defect
p0191 drukbewaking (pressure guard ) rail - comp def
p0115 koelmiddel (cool fluid) temperatuur sensor-comp def
p0480 ventilator 1 - comp def
p1612 verwarming brandstof (heating fuel) filter- comp def
p0215 elektrische brandstofpomp (fuelpump) -comp def
p1671 drukregelklep (pressure regulator valve) - signaal niet logisch

Got an image of a graph which shows nominal rail pressure 372 bar vs measured rail pressure 379 bar

Thats a lot of errors..

Including temperature..

How is a new pressure pump going to effect temperature

Sounds like a bad electrical circuit is causing bad readings from sensors??

I have no clue, it was at a garage that promotes itself as a firm who can find & solve electrical problems.. That's why i went there. Error codes are from 5 december but they replaced a few items so i think this list could be updated. Will ask again in the other garage.
Since they quoted the repair of the fuel pump so high and i'm also not so sure thats the problem, i went to my usual garage. They are going to pick it up and take a look at it. Will hear from them later this week.
Also if i'm replacing the fuel pump (did anyone take a look at the graph?)
