Angry Clunking from o/s front coil spring when turning steering

I have just started to notice a clunk felt under the floor when turning steering and discovered front 0/s coil spring is moving when wheels turned and that is causing the noise. I dont know if its dangerous to drive like it but its a 17 plate, serviced by Fiat in Feb this year and out of warranty as of March 1st 2020.

I think it must be something to do with the spring mounting but surely at only 15k it cannot be?

The upper mount is a bearing.. that lets the spring pivot as you steer.. the bearings can corrode and seize. Longterm inactivity..car sales lot..etc can play havoc

Look in Grande Punto section for LOTS of information

If youve kept the servicing together.. and with such little use.. they might

Try and find a dealer with a good reputation on here..

Some are FAR better than others for service

Hi trekkingnut, At very least Fiat should meet you half way, ie, they supply parts & you pay labour, or other way around. Normally good on this, go back to dealer who serviced it. When fixed, use the little trick a lot of us on here have done, solves future problems.....Cheers Qube O.

Re: Clunking from o/s front coil spring when turning steering

thanks for reply - what little trick is that? - packing the mount with grease?

This is my third Qubo- had a 12plate petrol but was gutless and a hard ride but otherwise reliable, then a 14 plate Trekking N1 version (4 seater but otherwise the same as M1 except for road tax). I spoke to a garage today about it (independent fiat specialist not main dealer) and they quoted 277 for both sides. Other Trekking cost me nearly 600 on an airbag module fault so compared to that not so bad and road tax on other one was 260 as opposed to 30 on this one!

Re: Clunking from o/s front coil spring when turning steering

Its been main dealer serviced from new EVERY year. I have only had it just over a year so am not the original owner hence my feeling Fiat will say I am on my own with this one. I will try Vospers who serviced it in Feb - only took them half hour including a wash that I didnt want, they scratched the glovebox, lower dash cover under glovebox now missing, pollen filter cover was hanging off and had oil on my drive afterwards as undertray dripping with oil. It now seems possible that the washing of the car may have been a factor in this as only driven 800 miles since and car been standing a lot lately due to lockdown. Do you think the wash could be the reason as no issues beforehand?

Nice manager but shoddy and rushed service but they are closed at the moment!

Re: Clunking from o/s front coil spring when turning steering

Hi, A little debate as to the cause of these bearings failing, firstly it was the quality of the original bearing (crap), that has been long sorted, so now we have two reasons, some folk think that water gets into the bearing from wheel spray under the car, the other (Fiat are aware) is a design issue, rain water drips onto the top of the bearing and soaks into its workings, turning it rusty and bust. You can see this yourself, wait until car has had a hour of so standing in the rain, pop the bonnet and shine a light on bearing top......water will be present........I rest my case !! haha. The 'trick', which I got off another member on here years ago.............go to the supermarket/shop (when you can), buy 2 black plastic tubed Mr Kiplings Sponge Puddings, come in a pack of 2 anyway. Unscrew the retaining screws holding the black plastic slatted grill vent which is between the top of the bonnet and the windscreen, then with a bit of care take a washed/cleaned empty tub, and liberally plaster the edge of it, all around, with silicon. Carefully lift the grill, and position the tub, silicon edge down over and to cover the bearing top and its 3 mounting nuts. Push it down and try to make sure its really in the correct position. The rain then drops on the inverted tub and is kept away from the bearing. A extra pair of hands can be a help, as you will only be able to lift (carefully) the grill on either side by just enough, do not be so hard puling it as to break it. The window wipers are what will stop the whole thing lifting away.........and I guess you will not have a window wiper puller. No matter the job is do able, take about a hour of so....No worries should you ever need the strut to be removed, for example replacing a road spring, the tub will twist and come away, just replace after with a new one.......Cheers Qube O.

PS, Had new bearings under warranty, Fiat replaced them, rubbish quality, went again when out of warranty, my None Fiat, Fiat Specialist replaced them, we tubed them and no probs since.............

Re: Clunking from o/s front coil spring when turning steering

thanks for that - its funny you mentioned tubs as i was thinking about putting domed yoghurt pots over the mounting but of course dont know if they fit as cant get to them!

I spoke to independent Fiat guy who said they put loads of grease in the tops and around the bolts to repel water but I like the idea of covers personally. I will take a look later and see if I am able to lift the scuttle cover enough to try a pot. Vospers were no help at all as cant get parts anyway. local garage is going to do them with non OEMparts for 200 all in both sides - he says they are good quality and not Chinese crap. Going shopping later so perhaps will try and get the sponge puddings as a treat and get him to fix them over the mountings after my wife and I have scoffed em! cheers - this is such a good forum with such good people on it and great advice so am puzzled why one independent fiat guy slagged it off yesterday when I rang him! - maybe its about free advice and knowledge??

Re: Clunking from o/s front coil spring when turning steering

If your car's warranty expired on 1/3/20 then you too must have a facelift Qubo? My warranty went west on 1st Feb ('20). I wanted a newer car as I do a fair old mileage and then the facelift model came out so a two year old car (as it was when I got it) just missed the VED hike so I'm still only paying 20 for mine. Any chance of a pic?
Assuming you do have the newer model then you and I must be the only two on here at the moment unless anyone else has and not divulged it. I guess with a Trekking you've got the satnav version of the horrible Daiichi radio? Cruise Control too (I SO miss that!)

Re: Clunking from o/s front coil spring when turning steering

just to update you, got sponge puddings today but no kipling ones only tesco! I amaged to lift the scuttle cover enough on passenger side to try but there is a lip on the mounts that prevents it seating properly and also goes beyond tub diameter. I then tried a rectangular dog food tray (empty of course - courtesy of my 13yr old rescue one eyed lakeland terrier ) and it pushed on and covered entire mount firmly enough to stay in place. Will see what mechanic thinks tomorrow but will get him to grease up the bolt heads and the little well where the shock comes through as a precaution.

Re: Clunking from o/s front coil spring when turning steering

didnt you have a power steering leak on yours? - I was thinking the clunk was to do with hose rubbing on mine but will get mechanic to check them whilst its on the ramp. No way will I go to Vospers again - rush job and no care. shame as manager good chap.

No idea how you upload pics to forum? - have you any of yours car?

I dont have satnav on my unit same its the same as yours. You can unlock the display to show videos on the move by typing 888888 in second settings menu in case you want to try it. I have made static videos of some music tracks so it gives the illusion of showing album art covers for the tracks - full screen. Looks nice and it made me feel a little better about it!

Maybe Tesco pots are either a little smaller, or a different shape slightly. The Mr K ones just covered the 3 fixings nice on mine......still important thing is to get it covered.........good luck & stay well. Cheers Qube O.
