A weired one: without warning, the boot door won't open from the outside, but when I try to operate it manually from the outside, it makes the rear windshield wiper operate? I can open the boot door manually from the inside, and it locks and unlocks without any problems, but otherwise....

I hate this car. :bang:

Spooooooooky
Sounds like it could be a earthing issue......but?
Bad earths cause all sorts of funny things to happen
I'm not 100% but i think the earthing point is behind the left hand boot side panel

Hi Folks
Car just got it's MOT :) but a few days ago it had started to have boot door issues.

It seems the wiring loom between the chassis and boot lid has a short.

This seems to be a common fault with other Fiat models and the symptoms appear randomly over time.

In our case:
  • Rear wiper is OK and the lights were OK for the MOT.
  • Wife reported that the boot lid button had stopped working. Fortunately it will still open using the key fob.
  • Some time ago the heated rear window stopped working, the fuse was blown and a new fuse did not fix the issue.
  • Some mornings the boot has come open and I have to stop and shut it. Up until now I've blamed finger trouble with the key-fob.

Diagnosis:
After reading about a similar issue with a Fiat 500, I started to investigate the cable from the chassis to the boot lid.
To my surprise a hefty squeeze of the rubber protector operated the boot lock

Tomorrow I'll do some more investigation, but I suspect I'll find something like:

I'll let you know how I get on.
If anyone has fixed this issue - any hints and tips gratefully received.

Thanks
C.T.

As expected there are broken wires in the tailgate/boot wiring harness.

  • Both fat cables that power the rear wiper or heated window (30A fuse?)
  • One smaller signal cable.

Q: Anyone suggest the cable gauges involved?

Attached are a few pictures to show what is involved.
  1. I used a trim panel tool and some bike tyre levers to work the trim panel loose. A bright LED torch helped as did being over 6ft tall.
  2. I tried to disconnect the harness in the boot so that I could slacken the cable and inspect it.
  3. I have had a quick peek in the rear pillar to see what slack can be found there too. Peering behind the light cluster and under the rear speaker shows many connectors, so with luck it will enable a lot more slack to repair the wires.
  4. For now I have made things safe and will investigate some more tomorrow.

Hi
I would just solder these together
Luigi

Yes I would too - any wire that's frayed (plus those broken) use a heat shrink-tube over the soldered repair for insulation.

Must be some issue of the flexi-tube allowing that to happen - was it not fitted correctly or had the flexi come adrift to allow the chafing that's cut through the wires?
