Reverse gear crunches

My 2010 fiat qubo has developed a fault it crunches when putting it in reverse it doesn't happen in any other gear its present mileage is 58,647
I do t think the clutch is slipping as was going up a hill in 3rd gear and changed up to 4th gear and suffered no loss of power/speed
One mechanic said I need a new clutch but another garage said I need the clutch cable adjusting
Any one got any ideas of what the problem is and is it just clutch adjustment or a new clutch

Thanks Qube O for your reply
Had the car examined by a gearbox specialist and they say that as it only does it when the car has been driven for more than 15 minutes and it is only reverse gear and there is no apparent fault with the gearbox then they think it's the clutch mechanism that is the problem
So have book the car in to a garage to have a new clutch fitted estimated cost 800 including VAT ( that's a local garage not a fiat dealership who quoted 1'485 plus VAT )

Re: Reverse gear crunches

Did you ever get issue resolved as i have had an ongoing problem with my Qubo auto gearbox as it has a recurrent issue with grinding when trying to go into reverse. it has been temporarily resolved by initially a resynch and a clutch change but the fault has reoccured several times. The car has now been sat on my drive since Oct 17 as it refuses to go into gear and I am in dispute with the dealer who I am currently taking to court. However the dealer is claiming bankruptcy and I may end up stuck with a car that I cannot use!
Hence if anyone knows how this problem can be resolved I may at least be able to use the car.
Thanks
Andy

Re: Reverse gear crunches

hi, i've had this problem for a while { crunch when i try to put it in reverse } , this only happens after a drive , it doesnt happen when i first start it, which is kind of weird.
i wonder if it's the hydraulics leaking .

Re: Reverse gear crunches

In the past I have over come this issue by engaging second gear before engaging reverse and this did the trick. Not saying it will work on yours but worth a try if your clutch is ok in any forward gear.

Re: Reverse gear crunches

My Fiorino did this and a new clutch sorted it.
Although the clutch seemed fine and not slipping it was not disengaging properly and so obviously the gear box was still sort of turning..... But any way that's how I cured my reverse gear issue

Re: Reverse gear crunches

Oh dear sounds like I'm due a new clutch as well then
Been having same problem. No slipping clutch or gear selection problems.... unless been motoring most of day and engine is hot when it becomes impossible to select reverse without crunching and possibly becomes touch harder to select other gears too (but no crunching).
Have tried all the tricks, selecting neutral or other gears first, applying hand brake to ensure 100% stationery, waiting several seconds etc with no avail.
Mentioned issue at last service and think mechanic adjusted clutch and problem largely went away for a while. However this was in autumn so suspect could largely have been due to cooler winter temps, because problem returned with the recent sunnier weather and when engine working hard in higher temperatures. NB can be a hot day but if only a shortish journey then no sign of crunching, have to travel a good few miles and work the engine hard before problem appears.

Re: Reverse gear crunches

This is almost exactly the problem I had.
I bit the bullet and had a new clutch
Make sure you get the slave cylinder changed at the same time as mine was in the bell housing
The slave cylinder may even have been the issue but there's no way of checking that because of where it is

Re: Reverse gear crunches

Happens to me from time to time. At the garege they told me they cant reproduce it but anyway its normal to all manual gearboxes. Dunno. I usually before getting in reverse press cluctch and wait couple of seconds before engaging reverse. Usually works.

Re: Reverse gear crunches

Although my clutch was not slipping and seemed OK if I was sitting in traffic for a while getting first gear was a nightmare also holding the clutch on a hill Tring to get second was difficult
The problem was the clutch spring fingers were weak and did not disengage the clutch fully so making the gearbox rotate hence the gear selection issue

Re: Reverse gear crunches

Mine started this at 72k , it turned out that the fingers on the clutch housing were well worn , me and my old man did it for 96 which was nice !

As i said in my comment
