my heater takes 4 or 5 mile to blow warm
on both my qubos anyone found this
I was going to fit a winter thermostat in but cant find 1

Common problem...........some left the factory with the wrong 'stat' fitted........so quite often its solved by fitting one which opens at a lower temp.

Common problem as Qubo says.

However more to do with being a small Diesel engine which always takes a long time to heat up from cold in comparison to an petrol engine, I have a 9 mile journey each way to work, mostly on a A road, this usually take a max of 20 mins, however on cold mornings it can be 5+ miles before the car is anywhere near hot.

lower should that be higher
as the stat keep the water in the engine till it gets hot before it lets it around the cooling system so lower would let it around sooner or cooler water ????

Based on the assumption that the rotary heater control in the car actual turns a valve to allow the flow of water, I put mine on Min until the temp gauge gets to the normal reading before I wind it up to full heat - then I have to put the fan on 2 to get warm air in the car (well, van). I can't believe that the other day when going down a long hill having climbed up one side, since the engine wasn't under load, the damn water temp actually went DOWN!!

It's a poor heater, if you knock the temp down to the next marker below max there's a huge drop in output heat into the car. If anyone can suggest a source for a better (UK) thermostat (and its rating) please post it up here - they'll sell a lot! Also where the thermostat housing is located as it's not so obvious on these modern engines.

Re: Qubo heater takes a long time to get hot

Often need to be a Taxi and pick daughters up from work at night.......cars nice and warm when I get there, 10 mins waiting with the engine ticking over and the gauge shows a fair old fall in temp. With resultant cooler air through the vents..........good job I'm wearing my thick winter jacket with its fur collar........lol.

Qube O,

Does it not just move a flap in front of the matix I think water valves went out when they stopped making the Morris 1000 :)

Does it not just move a flap in front of the matrix? I think water valves went out when they stopped making the Morris 1000 :)

Hehe - I remember that valve in my Moggy Minor Van (ex-GPO ;)).
In fact as I drove off to another job having posted my post today, I began to think, if the thermostat keeps the water in the engine until it's hot enough to be let loose on the car matrix, keeping the (possible) valve shut to the car would be pointless anyway as that only prevents the water from getting back from the engine at the temperature point where the stat opens (which then goes into the front radiator for cooling). Perhaps I'm fooling myself thinking it gets warmer quicker with the dial set to BLUE...

Qube 0 - surely it's wasting a lot of fuel sitting with the mill ticking over for 10 minutes? Just keeping the doors and windows shut will contain some warmth as you wait and gloves on too if that cold.

The coolant circulates through the matrix from work go though doesn't it the stat only holds it back from the radiator , shame they didn't fit the warm up assistor in the heater pipes like some of the French manufacturers do :(

yes the stat keeps the water in the engine and lets it in to the heater
but only lets it around the rad when it opens or gets to temp all the stats I can find are around 88 but don't know what is in my qubo
also the wife has a swift 1.3 ddis same engine as the qubo and that heater get hot fast
I will take my stat out and check it

Re: Qubo heater takes a long time to get hot

Yept.......happen I must burn a bit of fuel trying to keep warm.........perhaps a candle may help......hahaha.

Really would'nt be a problem if Daughter had any sense of time.........pick me up at 18.30 says she, so there I am on the car park.......she eventually rolls out of the shop at 20.10. Sorry I'm a bit late she says..................grrrrr.

Hence running the engine for the odd 10 mins, though by now its a waste of time anyway. More thermals please..........brrrrr.

just fitted a new thermostat 88 a right pain to fit as you have to cut the old hose clips off cost me just under £40 for the stat its the later plastic type
the heater is still the same takes a long time to get hot
but if you clamp the small pipe that goes to the filled bottle from the thermostat it will get hot a little faster . I have drove round all day with a clamp on this pipe the temp just gets to 1/2 way but the heater is better
I think the pipe is like a bypass from the thermostat to filler bottle

just done a mod if you put a 8mm bead in the pipe from the filler bottle to the thermostat and make sure the hole is in line with the pipe you still get water flow and the heater get warmer a bit quicker
I used a fishing rig bead

Any chance of a pic please? Can't possibly imagine that lot.. 'Hole in line with pipe' etc ;)

Ta!

I believe rvm means the hole in the bead you put the fishing line through is put in line with the flow otherwise it would make to much of a restriction .

yes that's it so you still get some flow but only a 1mm hole in the bead not a 8mm as in the hose or pipe so its a lower flow rate
put it like this only takes 5mins to do this not like 2 hrs to change the stat

So an i right in saying then that we are only restricting the water flow?
Please get a picture of the location of the restrictor.
wondering if i could use a 10mm tap in line?, so in the summer i could open up to full flow again(y)
