Hi, i'm pretty sure car insurance companies have something against me, Norwich Union - £2500 , Tesco - £1900 , Egg - £2300 and all the rest average around £2000+ .

I dont see the problem its a 1.1 and all you lot say is that you get quote for round about 1000 even if your young like 17 or 18.... i'm 17 and i lie of course saying i've got a full license even though i'm still learning.

If any1 knows a cheap insurance company where i'm not paying £2000 please tell me and yes thats on fully comp for those prices above .... i even tried with my dad and i only got £1800 and he's 41 i mean come on its a 1.1 [:(!][:(!]

Black Punto 55s - Modding it up of course ;)

You're not intending on insurance the car with you having a full licence and driving it whilst learning are you firstly?

Being the first driver (e.g. policy holder) on a car without a full licence is going to be a lot more expensive for obvious reasons.

My ports of call would be:

PHONE, not internet:

Churchill (try for both you and you under your dad) (check internet for phone number)
Liverpool victoria (only try you, they have VERY strict guidelines on second drivers and basically means that unless you're going to use the car less than 3 times per week, it's useless!) (get phone number of website, their quotes by phone are A LOT cheaper than on the net)

Internet first then follow up:

Endsleigh (Try for both again) (www.endsleigh.co.uk I guess)
CIS (Both) (www.cis.co.uk)

You might have to pass first to get anything 'reasonable'.

If your car is worth less than about 1200 then there isn't really much point to go for anything more than TPFT IMO but of course up to you. And as Dave said, low mileage lowers premium and most people like you are I cover less thn 4-6k a year anyway.

I had some fun getting insurance on my 2000 Punto Sporting.

Here in Ireland car insurance premiums are pretty nuts.

I bought the Sporting for 8750 euro (£5900) last month with all the extras (Cd multichanger, metallic paint, Abarth skirts and spoiler, subwoofer, 6 speaker kit etc). The guy that had it was a van driver and the car had just over 20,000 miles on it. I knocked money off the car from the car supermarket over kerbed alloys and a scrape on the front bumper.

That's the background. I passed my test in November, having previously held a licence for three years that expired (and then I had to resit my test). I had no previous insurance details, so that makes me a 22 year old male, no claims, no points, no history.

I rang for a quote with three companies (there are only three that will insure you under 25 over here) for an ordinary 1.2 Punto. AXA wanted 3,000 (Fully comp), Allianz 3,500, and Hibernian 2,500. With Hibernian I then did a one-day course called Ignition (run through the IAM - Institute of Advanced Motoring). It's a bit cynical - the insurance company are just chosing their customers (they won't quote you if you don't pass their course) but I managed to get 30% off my quote. If I take the full advanced driving test I get another 10%.

When I bought the Sporting I thought - oh s**t my quote was only for the ordinary model and that the badge would up the insurance - but it didn't. Funny, because as a comparision I checked elephant.co.uk and an ordinary Punto premium was about £1200, but a Sporting was double -almost £2,500.

In the end I got fully comp (insured for 8,500, 400 excess) for both me and my girlfriend for 2,100 euro (1,400 pounds) which isn't bad for a newbie, is it?

So folks, if you're buying a Punto in Ireland, go for the Sporting. Better car, same premium!

when you say phone not internet!! that is not always better i have a 1.2 mk2 8v and i was quoted by tesco 1800 on the phone and 1400 on the net!! bc they give discount on the net!! also direct line did the same!! but i thaught i had it bad at 1400. i would screem at 2000!! lol it would be a case of sod it give me a moped!! :D

mk2 punto in white, blue interior and more neons joining the car every day!! looking for ideas!!

Yes, it is true most insurance companies will give you x% off for buying online, however, IME, this saving is mainly outweighed by a massive price difference. I guess the reason for this is usually because it is more difficult to find the best deal for you using an online system at the moment and it is still easier for a person to do it for you and handle your specific requirements.

I tried it online and got prices from 1400-3000, by phone, 900-2500, interept that how you want...!

Some companies even tell you that to get a competetitive quote, you must phone and the website should only be a guide.

Best thing is to try both of course, but not everybody has the time.

Times like this make me a bit happier to be middle aged:
December 2001 1.2 8 valve Punto, 15,000 miles per year, Fully comp, Me, my wife, 19 year old student son on full license & 17 year old student son on provisional license, protected no claims bonus £480. Norwich Union Direct.
Speak to them but also look at their breakdown cover, taking out their breakdown cover at £40 ish saved me £50 on my premium. Some insurance companies are now realising that a broken down car left unattended will get trashed so they give a good discount for joining their own breakdown service, cheaper than paying out a hefty claim dor new wheels, a full set of new windows, a new stereo and anything else that is taken.

try elephant.co.uk and put u as the main driver and ur mum as the named driver i got my qoute for £1209.57 on a bravo HGT with namin the modds air filter, tinted windows, exhaust and my SP30 and i have no no claims bouns and im 20;)

Proud owner of a bravo HGT!! SO now for sale a very Cheap PUNTO 74,000 miles midnight blue 1.6 8v sporting K&N induction kit, lowered 35mm, full system exhaust, tinted windows, cadamuro light brows,de badged front and de locked passenger side, any offers *sold* £800 said it was cheap

I was playing on Direct Line's webs**te this evening; to insure me (male student, 20, nearly 3 years' experience but no NCB) on my 1994 Punto 55SX would be £1070 fully comp. For a '98 Punto Sporting it increased to £1370. But I'm sticking with insuring cars through my dad 'till I'm out of uni - currently costs £350/year for my dad to insure my 55SX, with me as second driver.

when i was 17 it cost me around £450 in total fully comp on my 55sx under my dads name, which means me, mum and dad can all drive fully comp in it!! this is with norwich union.

Try confused.com for a general idea of prices. Axa seems to get good prices for everyone. Oh and theres Elephant.co.uk too

Don't forget lots of things put up your premium without you realising:

address, age, whether or not you smoke, claims, your job, where the car will be kept etc etc

Just thinking back......

1st car I bought was a X plate Renault 5, I was 17 and still learning. It cost an extra £7 to put me on Mum's insurance.
When I passed my test, still aged 17, my 1st insurance was £400 fully comp.

This was 1989. It's crazy the amount of money new drivers are charged these days.....

Hi guys - i'm new to the forums :)
On to the topic i'm 17 (18 on the 29th of the month) and i can get insured on Norwich Union with PassPlus for around the £800 mark, which for a Punto 1.1 55 S is quite cheap i think. I don't know why all the quotes you have got are so expensive, but i agree Tesco are very expensive, they quoted me £1,600 [xx(]. Good luck with the insurance hunting :)
