I need to change the oil seal on the rh output side of the trans Haynes manual is worse than useless. model 1994 Punto 55S how does the output shaft come out? I assume you have to dismantle half the front suspension to remove the drive shaft.
But it passed its MOT today so it's not all bad!(y)

remove the wheel and the center nut unbolt and pop off the track rod end and unbolt and pop the lower ball joint pull the hub from the drive shaft and pull the drive shaft out twang out the seal and drift in the new one and the reverse fit what you removed should take about two hrs. failing that £50 at the local garage should do it.

THanks both weather permitting I'll have a go as soon as I can - was a time when a Haynes manual would have been useful these days they are so full of health & safety crap there is no room left for repair procedures!

Easier way is to just unbolt the lower ball joint, anti roll bar and the track rod end, you'll then have enought movement to get the driveshaft out.

Well I had a go today but have hit a snag, got the drive shaft out no problem BUT! the gearbox output shaft is another story it will not shift & looks as if you have to take out the LH drive shaft as well & release something from that side.Any clues or anyone got a section view through the diff? I had hoped removing the drive shaft would allow the output shaft to just pull out HUH! I might have known that Fiat would not make it that easy!(n)

it would occur to me that the oil seal would either be push fitted over the output shaft and seat with the help of a big socket or bit of piping.

OR you have to dismantle the diff part of the gearbox (if its seperate which I doubt on such a small car), and remove the diff outputs from inside. then the oil seals from in there.

Looks like the second option the LH side has a bolted flange but the RH side is a solid casting, the output shaft has the part to accept the three rollers of the inner joint & is in one piece. The seal is much smaller diameter. Changing a seal ought to be a simple job trust Fiat to cock it up Fiat must specialise in employing cupid stunts to design their mechanical parts My old Lancias suffered from the same problems - carefully design parts for maximum difficulty to repair or access:bang: !

If your talking about the intermidiate driveshaft its held in its carrier with three 10mm bolts which are quite hard to see, it will just pull out once there undone.

This is a 55S only has 2 drive shafts 1 long & 1 short it's the gearbox seal on the long shaft side that's leaking right on to the exhaust flexible - lovely smell!:yuck:
