I've done quite a bit of night driving this last few weeks, and I've noticed that the dipped headlights on my 1994 55SX are, to be honest, complete and utter s**te! I've seen brighter lights inside fridges; if anything overtakes me on the motorway their lights illuminate more than mine from 30 yards further back! It's not the old dirty headlights trick; I stopped at the services and gave them a wipe, still crap after.
So what I want to know is, what's a good, powerful type of bulb to replace my standard ones? I don't want any silly Max Power rainbow-tinted instant-ticket-off-the-rozzers type rubbish, just some decent aftermarket bulbs to help me see stuff at night :D Below £15 a pair would be preferable!
Oh, and what fitment is the Mk1 Punto headlight bulb? H4? H7?

Ring UltraXenon are great, but hate when other ppl have them as they are really bright from behind [V]

Hi,

I got Osram SilverStar's off E-Bay for my MkII and our new Ulysse and they are great. I think I paid about £8 a pair for H1's on E-Bay.

They are 100% safe for plastic lenses as they are reduced UV, they are also 100% legal in the EU and are a normal tint light. Apparently they what the AutoCar (or some car magazine)award.

mk1 punto takes H4 bulbs, be carefull if you buy off ebay i've bought a few bulbs off there and i didn't get what was shown on the auction page, i got crap bulbs in little white boxes.:(

I'm going to hunt around for the Ring or Osram ones; I think that the Punto's foglight bulbs are a H1 so might replace them too :D

Cheers for the help everyone, much appreciated! :)

Yep - mine were duff as well.

In an effort to fix, I fitted some Phillips Vision Plus items and did a wee bit of 'adjustment' (about 3/4 a turn on the screw) to the vertical alignment - which gives about another 10-15ft of illumination on Dipped Beam and another few miles (!) on Main Beam. I don't get flashed by other drivers and the car recently passed it's MOT with no re-adjustment performed, so I guess they must still be within spec... and they are better to drive with now.

Here come da judge...

hi,
i have the same prob with my headlights, ie there crap, i got some of those zenon bulbs from halfords, aparently super bright performance but i cant c it myself. in one of the previous posts you mentshiond ya could adjust the hight of the headlamp to make them a bit more useful, got a 2001 mk2 punt 1.2 8v "GO" (but it really dont) and i was wondering if someone could tell me wherre the screw is locate.

cheers peps:D

first mistake you went to halfords. never heard of zenon was that a typo, ive had a lot of bulbs that claim to be brighter but the ring ultra xenon are the ones that are realy noticeable.

make sure your voltage is correct, you could be losing power somewhere

neva go 2 halfords 4 anythin that place is crap, i bought some windscreen wipers fom there t'other day....and guess wot they squeek when any water gets on them :| wot the hell is the point in windscreen wipers that squeek when water gets on em?

they might get better in a few days, and you get what you pay for!

Met Cognac 99 Brava 100 HSX,

i get my wipers from pound land or market for £1 they work great, have to buy 2 packets for the punto though as they are 2 diffrent sizes, but that leaves me with 2 spares.

Try cleaning them with washing up liquid to remove production residue,

in my 55sx, i have replaced the headlights wih elx/gt headlights. These are great, especially with my vision plus bulbs in (4 x H1). Main beam you can see for miles, and dipped beam is very good too.
