My girlfriend got her first car a couple of weeks ago, Its a 95 Punto 1.1.
Not very meaty but surprisingly fun to knock about in.
Yesterday night things went wrong though. The engine had a massive drop in power and now it won't pick up above 1st gear.
We got a mechanic out who said the engine was fine but the problem could be either ECU or sensor related.
Anyone experienced a similar problem?
The mechanic said we have to take it to a Fiat dealer cos they are e only people with the correct diagnostic hardware...Is this true.
And are we gonna get shafted?

Quite possibly. If it's an ECU problem don't bet on it being cheap. Neither is a Lambda sensor. These things basically manage your engine and how it runs. Sometimes if it's an ECU problem it can be done without costing the earth but Fiat dealers being what they are...

Of course it could be being caused by something as trivial as blocked air intake to the sensor, making it confused. This is where it helps to have a guy experienced with Fiats able to look at it without costing a bomb!

Thank you people... turned out there were a couple of teeth missing on the cam belt... found a company called Avantec in aldershot. Outstanding service and the cost ...£40. Sweet. Needless to say we breathed a sigh of relief and the girlfriend is happily pootling around town once again!!!:D

Glad to here it, nice to know that there is still some fair garages out there.

Do you want to know the ironic bit... after getting "THE BEAST" going again,my car (with a fresh MOT and tax) has suffered a broken linkage on the gearbox. Had to drive 12 miles home last night in 1st!
Anyone know how tricky that might be to fix on a Delta??

Don't know what a delta is (thought it was a debit card) usaly linkage just pops off and you pop them back on some times the little plastic bits get worn and they keep poping off, changing the whole rod shouldn't be that hard usaly they just pop off and you pop the new one on,
by the way linkage on the gearbox is not an MOT item.

Yep its a Lancia... and Yep i've done a temp fix until I can get it to a mechanic... only needs tightning... but its tricky. not even an hours labour...i'll be tearing about by the weekend. As for MOT item, I know its not. just a bit pants of it to pop so soon after, got a new set of boots and had it balanced and it was going so nicely...
www.evoforum.net credit card joke lol!

Quite enjoyed driving the Punto to work during this though... How do you Punto boys and girls view your cars...? What made you choose the Punto over other small cars? I like my car cos its a bit of a rarity amongst the sea of fiestas, escorts, astras and the like... that and it goes nicely...

I chose the punto because it ain't small realy can get a single bed in mine with the boot only open a bit got a dishwasher in no problem with the boot shut. Plenty of leg room in the back for adult pasengers. dont think you can do that with fiestas, escorts, corsa/nova, my mate had an escort and there was no leg room in the back,

Why choose Punto?

Well, I was nineteen when I bought it and skint, so that was the first reason. Plus it was the best car I could get for my money. The competition was mk3 fiestas, ancient 106s, even looked at a piece of s**t AX. I had no licence at the time so I asked my dad to have a drive. He seemed to think it was OK so I got it. I thought it was a good-looking car, nice in black, very spacious important to me as I'm big, decent spec (it's an SX), good value. Haven't regretted it, I've had it over a year now and loved it. It's easy to work on, never let me down except once due to a dodgy alternator that was fitted (not its fault), and very very practical and economical little car.

It's only a 1.1 but it's plenty quick enough for me as I have no real ego issues about speed or acceleration. It's still only done 47k and I hope to have it for a few more years yet. It even looks good dirty!

I love my car!

Buying a Punto was pretty much the only decent choice. 2 years ago, I had £1600 with which to buy a reliable, confortable, and hopefully fun car; that £1600 would have got me, if not a Punto, then one of these...

Peugeot 106 - too cramped, too old-fashioned and all the structural integrity of a damp cornflake
Citroen AX - even shabbier version of 106. If you crash one of these at 40mph you're shafted
Ford Fiesta - ugly, tedious sheds with all the design flair of a sausage and terrible engines. Severe rot problems too
Nissan Micra - reliable, well-built and fairly comfy, but ugly, expensive for bits and very very dull
Renault Clio - reasonable handling and tolerable looks, but typical French build quality (i.e. flimsy) and horrible interior
VW Polo - overpriced, heavy, sluggish, but very tough. Expensive to maintain
Kia Pride - hahahahahahahahahahahahaha. 'Nuff said
Vauxhall Nova - a car with absolutely no redeeming features whatsoever. The typical transport of a**eholes
Vauxhall Corsa - even uglier version of the above
Rover Metro - cheap, nasty, most are rusting away

Out of all these, the only ones that I would even consider owning are the Micra, Polo (both are boring but safe) or the Clio. And even then, I'd be sorely tempted by a cheap Uno. The rest really are complete and utter automotive s**te. The Punto, to be frank, p***es all over all the above cars from a great height.
