My coolant needs topping up (its about 1/4 inch off the min mark).

Seeing as i dont know what make coolant is in the radiator, is it ok to mix it with another brand? Or should i just use water?

NB. No way am i draining the system and doing it fresh.

There are 2 "families" of coolant: Ethylene Glycol-based and Monoethylene Glycol-based. The 1st one usually comes in blue/green colours and the 2nd in orange/yellowish. Just make sure you don't mix products from a different family, or things will go wrong! Apart from that, its ok to mix whatever brands you feel like mixing. Just make sure you know what you have there already.

Oh, if it looks brown it doesn't mean you have the 2nd type... it means it needs a good flush :p

For a very small top-up, plain water should be OK. But if the car's coolant is over 2 years old, I'd drain, flush and replace it anyway. Keeps the system clean and corrosion-free, helps your water pump last longer and keeps the engine from overheating.

the coolants only about 3 months old (the missus went up the back of someone, hence new radiator etc.. that was fun) so theres no need to flush it. it just needs a tadge adding thats all - and i dont wanna bugger it up by mixing it with the wrong stuff. i'll check the colour of it at the weekend and take it from there. if its green i'll buy green etc...

cheers

In that case add 50/50ish. brand shouldn;t matter though as a rule you should be consistant when doing a full flush.
