Why not just buy a new car, will be cheaper and insurance won't bend you over

1242 SPI FIRE engine will hook up to the 55 gearbox so there's no need to change anything else.

Other engines that will fit? In order as to how easy...

1. 1242 SPI (Punto 60 engine - 60bhp). Near enough a straight swap.
2. 1242 MPI (Punto 75 engine - 75 bhp). Physically bolts straight in, but you will need to convert the wiring, ECU and possibly fuel system (not sure on this - assume it runs a higher pressure fuel system as it's MPI).
3. 1242 16v MPI (Punto 85 Sporting engine - 85bhp). As with Punto 75, except you'll probably need to change the exhaust as well.
4. 1600 Sporting/ Cabriolet (Punto 90 engine - approx. 90bhp). This is an older design of engine and totally different to the FIRE's. You'll need engine mounts, exhaust and gearbox, plus all engine electrics and ECU's. If you're going to go this far, you'd be better off going for option 5...
5. 1400 GT (Punto turbo engine - approx. 125bhp). Same basic design as the 1600, so you'll basically need all the running gear, engine, gearbox, driveshafts, brakes and all electrics from a turbo just for starters.
6. 2000 Coupe/ turbo engine. From what I hear it will fit, but will need loads of work and probably custom/ fabricated mounts/ parts.
7. Any engine that will fit under the bonnet. If you have the time and money, any engine that will physically go in can be made fit. For instance, one chap managed to fit the engine and running gear from a Delta Integrale into a Lancia Y10. The whole car had to be re-fabricated, and I suspect that it cost as much as a small mortgage.

If you've got the resources, the sky is the limit. If you want big power Punto without the hassle, buy a GT turbo. If you want an easy swap, go for a Punto 60 engine.

Hope this helps!

Chas

Chas
You just plug in the MPI loom from the donor car. If ECU is a problem the 55 ECU can be remapped.

You assume correctly that the fuel pump needs changing. It wilkl run on the 1bar pressure but will damage the engine long term.
