I've got a 1995 Punto Selecta 1200 which I have put a replacment gearbox and electro-magnetic clutch in. it has done a few hundred miles fine without any problems. recently, it has developed a problem where it jumps when idling in gear, like the elctro clutch is grabbing all of a sudden instead of comeing in gradually on acceleration. This usually causes the car to stall. When this problem occurs and you shift to neutral, you can't get the car back into gear because the electro clutch is biteing all the time. The only way to shift it through gears and to park is to turn the engine off, start it again and you can shift, but not for long before the problem comes back. The car still runs and drives fine once your moveing in gear.

Can anybody help. There's so many sensors and actuators I don't know which one is giving the wrong signal to the clutch unit.

Thanks

You'd have to be a brave man to fiddle with an ECVT unit without knowing 100% what you're doing. I'll be honest and admit I haven't got a clue how they work in detail (I get the basics, but..)

Is taking it Fiat or garage an option?:I

Have you checked the carbon brushes for the clutch, there is a line on them if they have worn past the line there won't be a line any more and they will need replacing,

I had this problem with the wifes punto Selecta, I fixed it by adjusting the micro switch at the end of the accelerator pedal. In your case it sounds as if it needs to be wound in a little. You also may have the red warning light on the dash on sometimes together with a ticking noise when accelerating underload. Correct adjustment of micro switch together with accelerator cable should cure these problems. Let me know how you get on.

Doctor Dave,

I'd be intersted to hear how you got on with your clutch problem. I have exactly that problem and am in the midst of trying to decide on a course of action. After owning a new Alfa I don't trust any dealer farther than I could throw them so I'm looking at a clutch replacement centre (£800) or second hand parts to resolve.

Can anyone tell me how to remove the brushes and check for the wear line indicator please ?

Any other advice regarding this problem is gratefully received. :)

Thanks in advance,

Paul.

Paul, dr dave hasn't been on for over a year, it was his first and last post.

If I were you you may like to start a new thread with your problem and others will try to help you out.

EDIT: You already have :)

it tells you abou brushes in the haynes manual, its a plastic plate on the front of the gearbox with a plug of wires going into it, its a redish brown colour held on with 2 bolts (10mm spaner size), if i was you i would wait untill a crashed selecta comes up on ebay, buy it and a haynes manual and do the job yourself :)
