Ok here's for everyone who want's to know how to get a Punto Mk1 gearknob off. PULL!!! Pull with all your might!!! There are so many posts saying that you need to cut it off screw it off etc etc, but you don't.
You unscrew the base (the bit on the floor that the horrible rubber bit is fastend to) and pull it up. The gaiter will turn inside out and not come right up because of the actual knob at the top, then grap your knob (hehehehe) and pull directly upwards, its really stiff but eventually it's give.
All you need to do then is buy a new gaiter because the old ones nasty and has a knob in the end of it, put the gaiter on the stick, the base on (with old gaiter removed) and then your new gearknob and hey presto, simple really isn't it.:D

My mum says im cool...even if my friends dont...

Thanks for that, i was about to saw mine off, i cant seem to pull mine hard enough though, will have to get a man to do it. So when you get your new gear knob does it screw on? :D

new knobs should come with different plastic fitting rings you just choose one that extremly tight and push it onto the gear stick. the fit should be tight enough to hold the knob on.

Some g/k come with allen key grub screws. Have a think about shortening the gear shaft before putting the new g/k on.
Getting my momo tomahawk this weekend.:D

Dave. :)

Marea 2.0 20v
FIATcentral window sticker, silver poppy coral, titanium tax disc.
Blue gaiters, Blue sidelights, Blue interior lights, Blue lacquer on engine, feeling blue ;)
Ecotek fitted, removed and waiting for warm weather
So much to do, so little time.... and Totally Skint!! :(

Well the standard Punto gearstick is admittedly monumentally long. Feels like driving a retro bus sometimes :D

Spirito di Punto | M-reg 55SX, black, 5dr. Clear repeaters. I'm fitting remote locking this week!!

My SX's gearknob comes off just from enthusiastic gearchanges [}:)] luckily the stupid-looking moulded-on gaiter holds it together!
Anyone know of a rpelacement gearknob & gaiter set that costs less than £20? They're all a bit pricey for a scabby bit of metal and plastic...
I'd definitely hack a few inches off the lever, it's like swapping cogs on an old Transit at the mo :p

if you've only got about 20 quid your best bet is a "typr vr" gear knob and gaiter it'll cost ya bout £25 all together. gaiters are expensive for what they are. and you'll need to hack a couple of inchs of ya gearstick cuz gaiters dont go all the way to the top of punto gearsticks.

Nice 1, Motor World flog the Type VR stuff don't they? I'm thinking of maybe getting a GT/ELX centre console from FIAT as well (apparently only £20 but doesn't include any gaiters) to fit along with a nicer gearknob and lever.

yeah motor world is ya best bet for that stuff, also don't know if youv'e got a market near you but if you have you often pick up little mods like that really cheap.

the gt/elx console price is that the actuall price quoted from fiat? also what does it take to fit it and would it go all the way to the front of teh car and not leave a space behind it if you fit it in a 60s

I don't know exactly, Mawbster. That price is what someone on the forum told me, and it should replace the handbrake surround, gearlever surround and the car's ashtray (the console attaches under the radio and has its own built-in ashtray & lighter socket). I'll investigate further once I get my hands on some money! :D

And I'll have a look on the market next time I'm back in Donny, cheers Sono!
