Technical MK1 Fiat Punto Petrol Smell

Ok looks like ill have to replace the filter, but theres a choice of two in Halfords  The cars a 1997 R reg 60 S if that makes any difference? Got to try and strip it down tomorrow in the pouring rain :(

hiya i 2 have a punto mines a 98 punto sx i can smell petrol when ever i stop my car with the engine on. I recently tried to park and noticed the smell was strong when i returned to my car i found a pool underneath. Since then i have noticed several leaks such as this and i have found that my car is leaking from what appears to be a petrol filter just below my back drivers door if that makes sense. theres a little black tray around it which luks kind of like a bit of drainpipe with a funnel on the end mines and behind it is the filter, the engine only seems to leak when its on and the fumes cum up thru the vents thats why its so strong. well hope thus helps.

i no in my last msg i said it was the fuel filter but is it defo the petrol filter cos mines below the back drivers door with black plastic round it but wots the difference between a fuel pump and a petrol filter or r they the same thing???

I had a petrol leak last year on my Mk 1 Punto. The leak was found to be coming from the pipe leading from the filler nozzle to the tank. The repair was done by fixing a sleeve over this pipe.

Well this week i've noticed my sporting smelling of petrol really bad its strong near the bk right side of the car near wheel just cleaned near all the pipes no leaks or splits any ideas?. Going to take the back seats up 2mos to check the lines

Would changing the fuel filter stop the problem?

Just discovered its the right hose the plastic bit on the fuel pump has cracked & it was spraying out jets of petrol thats why there was a strong smell inside the car :( :( :(

I have a fiat punto 98 60 "R" reg, I noticed that it seems to be using loads of petrol and smells really really bad of petrol as if im in a petrol station. I took it into the garage and they checked for leaks. Now they said there was no leaks atall on the car but the head gasket might be on its way out :S and that there is a slight mis-fire. Ive been told by someone else to change the HT leads and spark plugs, does anyone know if this would work?

Strong smell of petrol, using loads and NO leaks :(

i have a simular problem with my punto 1998 1.2 16v 60 s, when engine is off there is no smell of petrol, but when the car is ticking over and reved slightly there is a very heavy smell of petrol coming from the rear of the car, iv checked for leakage of the fuel filter and theres nothing, iv checked the pipes that also lead to the filter for leakage also nothing, Confused.com naw, i thought maybe it must be coming from the exhaust. ???? any ideas

Thanks Alot

this thread is 3 years old lol...

also your car cant be a 16v if its a 60

It may be a 3 year old thread, but it is relevant to me this week. It makes interesting reading, especially the bit about leaving your car for several weeks and the ECU relearning what it forgot. That's a good thing to remember (me that is, not the ECU)

I left my Barchetta for about 2 months with the battery off. Everything seemed fine for the first couple of days, but then it really started to smell of petrol when I was driving with the windows down and also in the boot. There is no evedence of leakage even with the engine on and revving and it doesn't smell from outside.

It does not appear to be using any more petrol than normal (I have covered about 500kms now), but the other day whilst filling up, the pump didn't cut out and petrol gushed out of the filler and onto my shoes. I moaned to the attendant and suggested that they sort out the pump but I was informed that there must be something wrong with my car as the pump relies on some jiggery-pokery from the tank/ filler neck/ vent to operate corectly. Could this be right?

I will get the filter changed as it would appear that 90% of this thread revolves around that and it's a cheap piece of kit to replace, but I'd like to know if there might be an issue with the filler neck? If anyone has a Haynes Manual for a punto, can they look to see if it explains what the filler/ vent does, and if they get blocked occassionally... I am struggling to find a Haynes manual for a Barchetta ;) (they are related after all)

I have had the same petrol smell in my mark 1 punto for weeks. Investigated today and had found a crack in one of the plastic pipes on the pump unit. Looks like i need a new pump/sender unit  Haynes manual states that I should unscrew the sender unit retaining ring with a "suitable tool". Anyone have any ideas what the "suitable tool" should be? I am guessing my only option is to tap it around with a mallet and a screwdriver.
