I have a '94 (M - ORIGINAL!!!!) Punto, ELX 75, and it has two lights in the dash that have problems. The first, is the door open light. when its damp seems to stay on, but this isnt too much of a problem, dodgy italian wiring I no.... but now, the handbrake light stays on even when the handbrake is off.....

Any ideas anyone?!?!?!?!

The switch on the handbrake lever can be dodgy, just take the plactic cover off the handbrake and check that the switch isn't stuck or broken. Failing that, the wire from the switch is probably shorting to earth somewhere.

Watch out here. The door light doesn't matter but the handbrake light has a double purpose. It's also designed to stay on if your brake fluid level is low. Check this out. If your brake fluid level is OK then you know you just have dash 'issues', hardly uncommon, as I had with my oil light once.

But beware. I ignored my battery light as I thought it was the same thing and broke down a few days later. The new alternator I'd fitted was faulty, and the light had been right all along :I

A classic case of Italian electrics, methinks! :D
When I first got my '94 55SX the handbrake light didn't work at all - a simple case of the wire had broken off of the switch contact. But I forgot all about the brake fluid sensor using the same light as the handbrake, cheers for pointing that out Pritch [8D]

cheers guys, much appreciated.... It may be the switch for the handbrake as i had the centre console cover of the other day to remove the quid in two p's which were lying around underneath the gear levers! (fallen down from the ashtray where i keep the spare pennies recieved from the maccy ds drive thru!!!)

But then saying that, i had my rear brakes (cylinders and shoes) replaced at the garage, so he may have bled the system wrong or something....

I'll check both. Wheres the switch for the handbrake light under the plastic cover??

You need to pull the whole centre console off the handbrake to get at the switch, from what I remember it's on the passenger side of the lever near the front of the lever's mounting. The 2 switch contacts are visible and should be pushed apart when the lever is all the way down.
