Finally got my engine fixed. Here is a list of the faults and what it took to fix them. Hope this info is of use to someone.

Car is a Punto 60, 1.2, 1997, 92,000 miles.

1
Erratic engine idling. A bit like I was constantly touching the accelerator pedal. Occasionally the engine would stall. Sometimes the revs would shoot up as if I had put my foot down hard.

2
Difficult to start. Two or three goes if the weather was warm, impossible if it was cold. Engine turnover was very laboured. The only way to start in cold weather was to remove the air filter and squirt some Cold Start into the throttle body.

3
Power drops during acceleration. A bit like driving with a clutch that periodically slips.

To cure this lot I replaced the throttle body and battery.

The throttle body was £70 from a salvage dealer. Complete with injector and sensors. (Needed new pipe clips. Allen key needed to undo the fixing bolts). Dealer was Britt Parts, Stockport. Took about 2 hours to fit.

The battery was a Bosch Silver, £22 from Costco. The equivilant was £52 from Halfords.
