Hi folks

I have an odd problem. My oil sump has rusted through at the front! I say 'an odd problem' because usually Fiat/Lancia engines leak enough oil to stop this! Anyway, it has gone very porous and has a number of pinholes. I fixed it a couple of years ago with fibreglass matting and silicon, but that's not really a long-term solution because the oil gets under it from behind and makes it come unstuck.

So - my question. Has anyone else done the job? I have had a quick look underneath and it doesn't look as if the sump will come off easily without removing other stuff and/or taking the engine out! It could be a case of having to keep re-fibreglassing it, but I'd like a permanent fix.

And as mentioned in other threads, my car is actually a 2000 model Lancia Y Elefantino Rosso, but they are mechanically identical to the S1 Punto 85.

easy enough to do if not a bit messy. You shouldnt have to take anything off the car but dropping the exhaust downpipe will make it much easier... You'll have to judge for yourself whether its worth probably snapping nuts and bolts to get the exhaust off or if thats just adding work.

Not sure what you are looking at that you think is in the way, can't picture what it might be, theres literally nothing there.

Fibre glassing is not the solution as you have found out. I’ve changed a few sumps, one of which was a mk1 punto The biggest problem I found was getting the old sump off. A tip, it’s held on with a very sticky special glue, take all of the bolts out bar two, one front and one back. Large flat screw driver and work your way round, when the sump lets go, it won’t come down on you.

Clean the surface very well, no oil should be present. I would give the new sump a few coats of your chosen metal protection paint, etch primer first. Read directions of liquid sump gasket and offer up to the surface, bolt up and leave overnight before filling with new oil.

Brilliant - thanks guys. The car is lowered, which is why I can't see very well (trolley jack not here!). But if it drops easily all I should need is a gasket set (oh, and a sump). The fibreglass lasted 2 years, which I thought was pretty good - not a huge amount of time every 2 years. But I hate the thought of the oil seeping through slowly behind it and pushing it off...

Oh, and the exhaust is new - got the broken bolts T-Shirt recently. So they should all come off again nicely!

This was addressed/mentioned earlier"..;)

Sorry.. was actually halfway through that post.. about dropping exhaust..
when I got a mail from 'the post office' asking for payment for a parcel I'm not going to receive..

I suspect the sump may break ito several sections as it is wrestled off the base of the block.. ;)

Aye, personally I find the removing of the old sump is the worst part for several reasons, mostly the most messy, depending of course how dilapidated the sump is.

Thanks guys (again). Yes, missed the bit about the instant gasket - just done the water pump on the other one, so I should have known. The sump is mostly sound - it is only the front face that is rusty. I am kicking myself for letting it get like it, but my son was using the car for 2-3 years, 900 miles away from here, and I hardly ever saw it. It will be getting A LOT of paint on it. Better get a crowbar to get the old one off!
